Which 12v TV

We recently tried our TV on 12v the other day. It soon became apparent that our TV eats too many amps as it soon zapped the batteries. It is a domestic 19 inch flat screen Daewoo with DVD and usb connection.

There are a lot of different makes out there but my question to the TV boffins amongst us is; has anyone any idea which one is the most efficient 12v TV to use in the MH? B-)

As you have found out there are some incredibly inefficent LCD digital tv's out there, some use much more power than CRT tv's, especialy older and cheaper LCD tv's, by law all tv's(and other electicals) must specify power usage so if no one can give you a difinative answer then you'll be able to trawl throu the specs.

After a lot of research we've discovered that the very best one is actually.....................................not to have one in the MH.

Amazing things like conversation, listening to music, playing card games, reading, socialising, etc take place in the absence of the ubiquitous goggle-box.

Hi Bill,

Have a look here, they get some good reviews :-

Hope this helps

Regards.

Graham.

I recently bought a Kogan LED 16" Tv/Dvd combi. It uses far less power than our previous LCD set, which was just a Tv, not a combi. On a recent 4 week trip, the batteries lasted much longer than usual.

The picture viewing angle is quite good too. Far better, for example, than the slightly cheaper Techwood model, that I bought from Morrisons ( Fortunately, my son said that he would have this, for his office ).

LED backlit LCD TV,s SHOULD take less power than older types with traditional back lighting. But you should trawl the internet looking at the specs of the sets that interest you. Avtex are pushed very hard but are expensive compared with most of the rest.

Avtex prides itself on the lowest power consumption and manufactures a variety of televisions and TV/DVD combi's aimed specifically at the MH market. They aren't cheap by any means but are multi-standard. The 10" I use in my van cost almost as much as my 40" flat screen.

Room dictates the size of screens in MH's and 10" was my max. Screen resolution is brilliant but it falls down on the audio side (possible because of the tiny speakers). Maybe the larger sets give better audio.

We have a Cello 12volt LED tv/dvd. It's the cheaper end of the market but works fine with low consumption. When we did have a problem, although it was 'Return to Base' warranty, they collected it, repaired it and returned it very quickly and efficiently.

Think the 16.5inch we have is about £149 including 12 volt & mains leads etc.

Thanks for all your replies, I have spotted a Kogan 19 inch TV/DVD/USB for £99 with free shipping. Consumption is nearly half that of my Daewoo. £9 for the 12v connector. Anoyingly, we bought a 12v connector from road pro at NEC for £49, hhmm, half the price of the new telly.

I shall look at other deals but Kogan is looking good and has some good reviews.

Thanks again

Small with low consumption for me every time, currently also use a 10" Avtex. Never use EHU, only ever charge batteries from the alternators, never worry about turning the TV / DVD on. Don't forget the Avtex has an FM broadcast feature that allows you to tune your 'vans FM radio in to broadcast the sound over the vehicle's audio system. We use that facility occasionally if overnighting next to waterfalls etc.

  • 1 year later...

Hi to all,

just been reading this thread

I have been running motorhomes for the last 20yrs, yanks and europeans, and had many tv's in them

In most cases a 12v tv uaes about 25w to 40w of power about 3,5amp to 5amp, should run a tv and lighting with an 88ah battery should last well over 48hrs

as for comments on the manifacturer Kogan, they are Australian and from past experiance the TV's

are Budget and if they go wrong or you have a problem with it then time to pull your hair out

there after sales service is very bad, email only, I sent a TV back with a problem, they took 2 months

to arrange a courier to collect and that was with me emailing 3 to 4 times a week, they kept on telling me the courier was booked and never turned up, then 8 weeks after collection they tell me I would get a refund as they did not have a replacement, another 3 weeks and a full refund was given

customer services is just as bad

now Cello are a different kettle of fish, UK made and very good after sales and customer services

no complaints to date, but if you want a tv for caravan or motorhome make sure it is a TRAVELLER not just 12v, there is a difference

the traveller also has a built in sat receiver and freeview, cuts down on weight and power useage

happy days

Just read this 'Resurected' thread, like a trip down memory lane, lots of folk who used to post regularly.

Where have you all Gone ?

TV's , must admit we have an Avtex 16" had it for a few years now, with a DVD player, memory stick compatable. Expensive , yes, But very good 'viewing angles' you can still watch it whilst sitting almost parallel to the screen, Not so some of the cheaper ones. Tried them. Ray
