JamesFrance Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Is the Aston Martin shown in this video, being driven by Count Zborowski. But I didn't know that then, so I sold it for £125. Biggest mistake ever.
nowtelse2do Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Just recognised a few forum members, Yourself James with the little black tash, pelmetman with the microphone, or was it a tun-dish :D Brian Kirby starting off on his career in the construction industry (you swing a good piece of wood Brian) and our own Mel at the end. (lol) (lol) Then on the following video our own Bruce, The Nomad. Very disappointed Bruce with the ciggy shot with the arm around the old man at the bar, tut...tut >:-( Dave :->
Tracker Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 All I could afford at 19 were a selection of old Mk 2 Jags - wish I'd kept all five that I had over those few years before mortgage and family led me into many years of mainly estate cars!
nowtelse2do Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Rich bar-steward. Standard 8 for me at 19. :'( Dave
Guest pelmetman Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Didn't get my Jag until 21...............3.8s Bullnose a Jersey import B-)
Mel B Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 nowtelse2do - 2012-11-28 2:51 PM ... and our own Mel at the end. (lol) (lol) Dave :-> Oi ... I'm not THAT blooming old, just cause I 'retired' this year ... I'm not even 50 yet ... although sometimes I feel 80!!! :D
Tony Jones Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Mum's Mini - and not "every day" either, just when I could swing it! I was 20 when I got my blue & grey Ford Anglia 105E for £65 - possibly the same car later used by the Weasleys in the Potter films, but it usually stayed on the ground when I had it! Just remembered though - it was all pale grey when I bought it, I painted the lower half electric blue (with a brush of course!)
PJay Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 My first car was Ford Anglia 100E side valve engine.Cost £50. Black with "go fast" white stripe on each side. You could see the road through the holes , where the sills did not attach to the floor!! Pre MOT days.OH made new stainless steel sills , which were probably the strongest part of the car. The screen wipers did not work going up hill, so had to take foot of acelerator briefly to clear the screen. Swopped it for a Ford consul 375,.
JamesFrance Posted November 28, 2012 Author Posted November 28, 2012 The old Aston had the accelerator in the middle and the brake pedal on the right which only worked on 2 wheels, so I usually stopped her with the outside handbrake which worked on all 4. I was stopped by a copper who didn't believe that was the reason for using the handbrake, but he went over the windscreen when I gave him a demonstration of how it could stop from speed. It was not too good to drive in wet weather as it had no windscreen or floorboards, although someone had added mudguards and lights since it raced at Strasbourg.

laimeduck Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 And my Harley Davidson WLC 1942 vintage ex Canadian Military Police. Bought for £15.00 in 1967 & sold for £30.00 in 1972
Tracker Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I wish I still had both of the Mini Cooper S that I had in the 60s - one 970 cc and one that began as 1275 cc and ended up at 1340 cc with a few mods! Now that was fun driving!
George Collings Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 My first three cars were pre war. The first was a special with a wooden chassis. See pic. At 19 there a couple of 35-37 Morris 8s. Hydraulic brakes three speed boxes and 60 mph down a steep hill. Then a 47 Ford Prefect. Engine rebuilds at 7000 mile intervals for a new set of piston rings. Vacuum wipers that stopped if more than half throttle used. Same problem still with the 100es into the 1960s. Here some of the more interesting. There must have been almost 50 over the years. A £60 55 Austin A90. It was cheap due to the nasty stain on the back seat. The previous farmer owner said it was due to a lamb being born there. kept that quiet with female pasengers.Driven gently it did 27mpg but normally 14. Jowett Javelin. Bought as a non runner- made one engine out of two. Nice car but the rear shock absober mountings were rusted out, it made for interesting handling. 55 Citroen Big 15-best sports car - bench front seat with no gear lever in the way. Three speed box. Over revved it in second and cracked a piston. threw it away. 65 ish Lancia Flavia 1500cc flat four. very quiet ride, handled well but flat as a dab unless revved it very hard when it flew. Wonderfull engineering but wife could not handle non power assisted steering so it had to go. 75 is Citroen GSA Great ride handling and steering but a pig to work on. Rust 1275 Mini. It was a standard 850 but I dropped the 1275 on top of the 850 gearbox. It was faster up Haldon Hill on the A38 west of Exeter than an 850 on the flat. 80 ish Volvo 240 GLT bought as a write -off. Fuel injected. driven gently was an old mans car but it handled well if taken by the scruff of it neck. Saw off a Golf GT on a long sweeping bend. The driver got all crossed up and blamed the car. It passed me on the straight at about a ton belching black smoke as he revved the nuts off it. Te he After that family cars mostly Fords and now a really boring Scenic cos its easy to get in and out. Prefer driving the Medallion especially in mountains now, More fun than a boring modern car.

PJay Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Interesting that we all started with "British" cars, Ford, Austin Etc, now most of us have Foreign makes. Sad fact of life, British manufactoring gone to the wall!! (Have a Kia myself) Cheaper than the Ford equivalent.!

JamesFrance Posted December 1, 2012 Author Posted December 1, 2012 Yes, I often think how much money I must have wasted over the years, but until 1980 the expensive ones were all company cars, which you could benefit from then without the taxman being involved. I enjoyed them then but don't miss them at all now. One I disliked was a new Jaguar XJS which was too quiet, automatic and had steering which pulled to the left. After less than a year the alloy wheels were corroding so I got rid of it. I was lucky the list price had gone up from £12500 to £16000, so I didn't lose too much on that one. I only made a profit on three, the 2 Astons and the 350SL. We started our honeymoon in the MGA so have been married 50 years this year.
nowtelse2do Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 What year, and what engine size was the XJS James? Dave
