George Collings
It sounds like the starter solenoid is taking a while to operate. Check the battery connections, if they are loose or dirty it might take a couple of goes to make a good connection. Also check there is a good earth connection from the battery and at the heavy cable or strap earth connection between the engine and chassis. It quite often runs from the starter itself. It may be that due to the prolonged wet weather rust has formed on the sliding parts of the spider. Regular use should clean things up. If possible take the vehicle for say a twenty mile run and stop and start the engine several times. Its good practice a couple of times a month anyway to prevent sleepy van syndrome but dont bother if the roads have been salted when arun will do more harm than good.
