Bolly1965
I have just bought a Smart Roadster, which will have an A-frame fitted for occasional towing behind the motorhome. I don't want this to become another thread about the rights and wrongs about towing a car (and I'm not going to be taking it abroad) Can anyone suggest a specialist insurer? Mickydripin
Hi Bolly why do you need a specialist insurer is your smart car very expensive?. I have a Toyota aygo and it was new when I insured it I told the insurance company what I was going to do with it and that I was going abroad to europe for holidays and would be using it in the UK. All the insurance company wanted to know was if the Aframe and the towbar were fitted by a proffessional company and what did it cost. I am with Saga insurance and They charged me no extra. Brian Kirby
I agree with Mike. There are a number of insurers who specialise with motorhome insurance, and most, if not all, of those should be familiar with the concept of A-frame towing. The simplest remedy will probably be to insure the car with whoever insures your van. That way both ends are in the same camp, which might have advantage under some circumstances. The point is that when towed, the car, for insurance purposes, becomes a trailer. As such, the third party risks are covered by your van insurance. Actual damage to the car (as opposed to damage done by the car) while towing, therefore has to be covered by the car insurance (same principle as caravan insurance). One insurer for both, who understands what is proposed, seems to me the solution most likely to avoid complication or dispute should the worst happen. Patricia
I think you will find that most insurance companies will insure you but only for third party damage while on tow. If your car is new(ish) I expect you will want comprehensive insurance and the only companies that I know of are Comfort and another, whose name escapes me, who advertise insurance specially for women. I insured with the latter and insisted that I had the comprehensive cover when on the A-frame in writing (which they supplied). I later transferred to Comfort which insured the m/home. . This was several years ago so there might be other companies now who will offer this cover.
Bolly1965
it's not a particularly expensive car, the only reason I ask is that the A Frame is a modification to the car, which most insurers won't understand. I don't want to insure with the same company as he van as I am not happy with them, When I swapped vans they told me that the cost would only go up by £20 and when the time came it was doubled. I'll put in a call to Comfort during the week and ask them about insuring both the van and the car. Might be worth leaving my current van insurance early. I did a compare the Meerkat search for the car as standard and AXA was the best at £230, which seems reasonable. I'll call them to and tell them of my intention to tow it
