Autocruise Starburst 2006 antifreeze in hot water system?

Hope someone can help. We drained down the van before winter and lagged the hot water tank. Have just taken the lagging off and there appears to be blue coloured water leaking out of the connection where the rubber hose connects to the tank.

A: is this serious

B: what can we do to stop it.

C: don't understand what the blue liquid has to do with the hot water tank as the antifreeze bottle is a separate tank.

We are supposed to be going on a rally tomorrow but don't know what to do.

are you talking about the engine or Truma water heater...which model. Im not technical at all but this makes little sense, I think you need to give clearer info if you want informed help...

....whilst I can't help very much with the overall issue, Ii suspect you are suffering similar problems to those outlined here:

If the water is blue-coloured, it is probably from the (closed circuit?) input side to the calorifier (tank), which probably would not be drained down, and would also probably include antifreeze.

A bit scant on info but here goes - yes it is potentially serious and you should not fire it up until sorted.

What colour is the coolant in the clear tank fixed to the side of the locker and has the level dropped?

The anti freeze colour varies according to what make but assuming it is blue it sounds like you have a leak - says he stating the obvious.

Assuming the anti freeze concentrate was adequate it should not have frozen and you may only need to tighten up the jubilee clips and the compression fittings - most of which are well known for slight leaks as the years pass so this is a good time to check them all - especially those that are hard to get at.

If it did freeze then either the hose or the tank has split.

The hose you may well be able to shorten if it is dodgy close to the jubilee clip failing which you will either need a new hose from Eberspacher (expensive) or you may be able to source a length of plain heater hose from a motor factor as long as there is enough space to get the curves without kinking it.

Repairs to the tank have been explained on the other thread and it depends on your ability with a soldering iron or whether you know a friendly plumber unless you want to buy a new tank - better start saving up!

You may need to cut away the insulation to see what is wrong and if so do it carefully so that you can reuse it

It is possible that the leakage is from the domestic side of the hot water tank and the blue colour is related to the insulation but that may be influenced by the anti freeze coolant colour?

If the hot water tank itself is split repairs or replacement as previously described may be your only option.

I do know that these can be real bu@@ers to drain down sometimes and water can remain in the pipes and water tank / heat exchanger / calorifier.

The blue water, ( antifreeze mixture ) is the water heated by the Eberspacher heater. This is pumped around the pipes / hoses to the hot water tank. Inside the hot water tank is piping in the form of a coil or hoop which carries this heated 'blue water' and so transfers its heat to your clean water in the tank. It sounds from your description of the leaking blue water at the tank connection, that you may just have a loose hose connection at this point.

The Surecal website has some diagram / illustrations which may help you to understand the system better. These diagrams may show a vehicle / boat engine and not an Eberspacher heater but the principle is the same.
