Dangerous Aires

Hello to all my Fellow Wavers,

I am off to France very shortly and I have been reading about these Aires and what I want to know are they very safe to stop in as I have been told that they are only used by poor people and gypsies,as my mate Davy who was a once a Romany Relocation Officer was telling me that officially they are only used by gypsies and normally they are full of Jennys and Toads, what he means by that I do not know so if anybody can throw some light on this subject it would be much appreciated Your Happy Waver Henway (lol)

Sorry but your mate Davy is talking rubbish,we have used Aires many times ,out of the 30 or so different ones in last two yerars we have used only felt uncomfortable once.Never yet used an Aire with a generator on,in fact lots have electric.Have parked on an aire and stayed while being the only one.If you don't find the Aire to your liking move on to next one ,plenty of them.

Gypsies tend to have double axle caravans, white Mercedes vans and travel in groups, you can't miss their sites in France and seldom will they occupy aires, which are for motorcaravans only, tho' a few tight arsed Brits are spotted around ferry ports occasionally.

We use aires 75% of the time, never had any bother from neighbours or gennies. Some spots are truly idyllic, hurry up and use them now before they are all gone.

The only Aires to avoid for overnight stops are the one's on the motorways and major roads . We have been using Aires regulary since 2007 and have never had any problems in all that time . The only Aires we could not use on two occasions was because the annual travelling fair were in town , but the local police directed us to another parking spot for the night .

Your mate Davey is a remarkably versatile guy. He used to drive a bus on Rockall, he's been a 'Romany Relocation Officer', and now he's an electrician.

I wonder if I encountered him during the 1980s when I was a sniper in the Ugandan special forces. One of our more vicious interrogation specialists claimed to have driven a bus on Rockall. He was Welsh and known as "Mad Dai the Crocodlle-Clips", which might explain why 'your' Davey has ended up as an electrician.

But the more people like him the better, leaves the Aires for the rest of us to enjoy. :D And we do ! ! apart from Henry ;-)

Enough Monkeying about with little Davey Jones and his genuine Liverpool accent.

Oh the fun we gain from those who have little knowledge.

Pikeys and itinerant workers over here would not be seen dead on an Aire de stationnement- Camping-car  They have their own Aire d' Accueil Gens de voyage tres posh with built in Shower block and toilet, bus pick up point for the kids to go to school and enough room and skips for their 'legitimate' occupations.

Hi

I have used the Aires in France and found them very pleasant places full of friendly Motorhomers, of many nations, I would not use those connected to major roads for anything other than a stretch your legs stop, not even the Loo, which are not very nice.

I would suggest that when choosing your Aire, have another one as a backup, if I did see characters that I did not like the look of I would move on to the next one. But saying that have never found the need, did arrive late at one Aire and the other occupants moved their vans so we could get the van in.

The advice I have found handy is to try and arrive about midday as that seems to be the time when most people leave or arrive. Do not worry about being new at it, even the seasoned motorhomes seem to give the facilities the once over.

You discover some wonderful things using the aires, enjoy.

Your mate Davey is right I'm afraid. They are for gypsies and poor motorhomers who can't afford the luxury of a proper campsite.

Sadly as I have fallen on hard times recently its all I can afford. I havent met any Jennys but if you find one send her round as I need cheering up.

Here is a photo of an typical Aire. We quite like this one though and stayed a week.

So what's wrong with gypsies then? They are different in France, I have stayed with them and had nothing but friendliness and courtesy. They all seemed to have a job to go to and the young ladies who obviously could not find work, occupied themselves by sitting at the roadside and waving and chatting to lorry drivers.

My mother was an Irish gypsy, my father on my birth certificate simply shows "some sailors".

It is unfair and racist to criticize those who come from more humble backgrounds. The French gypsies did not speak Romany or Gaelic, but we got on well, I even purchased a Rolex watch and nearly new laptop at bargain prices.

So stop calling us unpleasant names, we are Romany gypsies and we pay our taxes just like everyone else.

Nice aire that. Did you meet up with any other forum members ?

Looks like one of those where people go who don't like to be "herded" onto campsites.

When you have had a holiday in France using the Aires you will wonder why you ever bothered with UK campsites!

Just take some Aires lists either as books or as POIs, read up on here and other forums where the best are and get out there and enjoy yourself.

The only rules in selecting an Aire are keep off the ones by motorways and major roads and look around when you park and get your own feeling for the place. If it feels right it almost certainly will be OK.

We've used dozens in the past five years and only ever moved on once. Like I said you get a feeling of the place.

I agree with the opinion expressed above and strongly disagree with your friend’s.

When touring or traversing France we use a mix of aires and campsites. The aires are very often much better located than the campsites. We have stayed at aires alongside rivers, lakes, overlooking mountains, parkland and the sea. At the more popular ones you will find motorhomes from all over Europe.

In the interest of balance I have to add that there are aires that are no more than a grubby corner in a car park.

And the safety caveat always applies – never overnight at aires on motorways and major roads – people have been robbed at these.

Cattwg :-D
