Marg
We would like to lend our Autosleeper Duetto to my sister and brother-in-law for five weeks so that they can tour Scotland. They are British nationals but have been living in Spain for 10 years so have Spanish driving licences. Our insurers (Caravan Club) will not extend cover to anyone without a UK licence and other insurers I have contacted all seem to have the same policy. I'm sure it must be possible to get cover as I know that motorhome swaps take place and, presumably, people from abroad get cover somehow? Can anyone help? Thank you. Dave225
Can they not contact their Spanish insurer and see if their cover can be extended to cover the motorhome? They can of course drive it with basic 3rd party Cover but I doubt you would appreciate that. The other option is to make them named drivers on your Policy, but then it is your risk. I doubt any UK insurers will cover anyone not resident in the UK, even if of UK nationality. However, have you also perhaps tried specialist brokers. Guest JudgeMental
Why when moving to Spain would you give up your UK driving licence. Or is it because it is registered to a UK address. Surely you could register at a family address if you have sold up here.... IF they have EU passports it should not be a problem, may well be your insurer. have a dig around on the net , this ex pat forum may be a start http://www.expatforum.com/expats/britain-expat-forum-expats-living-uk/116074-car-insurance-uk-citizens-whove-not-been-residents-th-uk-past-12-mths.html
Dave225
I think the issue is that they are not actually buying the motorhome basically using it on a free rental. Hire Companies have blanket Policies but this is a 'friendly ' arrangement and of course falls between the cracks.
PJay
When I added my son to our policy, for just a 2 week use, All that was asked was when passed test, any driving convictions, and what his job was.I don 't recall being asked if he had a UK licence or not. If, as I suspect your BIL/SIl passed their test in UK, should not matter, I would have thought. PJay

Guest JudgeMental
You would think an EU licence would be OK Google " can I insure a car in UK with EU licence" and loads of companies pop up offering short term insurance
Dave225
JudgeMental - 2013-02-28 11:23 AM You would think an EU licence would be OK Google " can I insure a car in UK with EU licence" and loads of companies pop up offering short term insurance Again I think the issue is that in this case it is not a commercial transaction, but merely a loan. If the motorhome was being hired then probably not a problem, but Idoubt many Companies will insure something you have borowed with consent, however you never know. Marg
Thanks for the responses - looks like some useful leads there. Unfortunately we are not allowed to have two insurances running on one vehicle at the same time (I can see that could lead to problems with claims). So, if we (or my sister) took out short term insurance we would have to cancel our usual cover then reinsure after five weeks when the van was returned to us. That's a bit messy and could be expensive but if there's no other way it might be the way to go. My sister and husband did have British licences for about 30 years before moving to Spain but have had to change them for Spanish ones while living there. DVLA confirm that there would be no problem exchanging their Spanish licences for UK ones if they ever move back here. Wish the insurance companies were as accommodating! I'm still investigating some of the other options suggested and am working my way through the insurance companies mentioned so will post the results eventually. Great! So have you moved your policy from CC?
