Grivas
We are hoping to spend a period of 6/7 weeks travelling around the frontiers of Frau Merkel's backyard in May/June/July. Any general advice regarding driving eating and locations? Far end of the round trip will be Berlin. The dog is practicing her Voof Voof!!
Tony Jones
If you literally want to go "round the frontiers," 6-7 weeks will be pushing it a bit. It's a big country, with a very wobbly border. Down at the bottom there's a bit of Bavaria around Berchtesgarten, which sticks out southwards - well worth a visit for the lake at Konigssee, with its amazing echoes. Not far from Hitler's Eagle's Nest for the historically minded. As (in another region altogether) is Colditz Castle - harder to find than to escape from though! Berlin itself of course is a "must-see." We found a Stellplatz on the outskirts - not very pretty, but only €10 and handy for trains and buses. Get hold of the Bordatlas (published by a German motorhome mag) for stopovers of all types and prices - FAR more informative and accurate than the Caravan Club's attempt, AND you can download the locations to your SatNav.. Mike B.
We stayed at the 'Wohnmobile Park' in Berlin which was very good, easy to find and quite near the train into the city centre. http://www.stellplatz-berlin.de/Startseite.2.0.html?&L=1 The area around the stellplatz is good with bar suprmarket etc 1 minutes walk away. Also well worth a visit en route is Hameln (Hamlyn) where the children act out the Pied Piper story in the park every Sunday morning and is very good to see. You can also walk around the Pied Piper route through the town etc marked out with rats! There is a stellplatz down by the river where we stayed here. http://www.hannes-weserblick.de/index.php?id=258 Enjoy your trip-Berlin is well impressive-you can hire a Trabbie for a day and drive round if you want but would suggest the 'hop on hop off' bus (Open top decker) which is good value and when you see somewhere you want to spend some time at, just hop off and get the next bus round-they run about every 15 mins or so. Alternatively you can hire one of these and have a green day! Mike
Thai Bry
HI GrivasWe have toured Germany for years now and keep on unearthing little gems every year.If you have the chance to get down as far as Munich, then there are some lovely areas here.Ammersee area, is where the rich Munich people have ome lovely homes. Place is packed in the summer, but there are steamers criss crossing the lake, so a worthwhile vist. A bit further along is Chimesee - where one of King Ludwig's palaces is situated, again, a steamer takes you onto the island where his palace is located.Another nice area is Heidelberg, we found a nice sight in a small town called Neckar Gammund. We even caught a river boat from the village into Heidelberg - a lovely 45 min trip. Or you can catch the bus from the town centre staright to Heidelberg - one every 20 minutes.Have a great time touring the country. Enjoy!!
