Quite acceptable, IMO, as a mannerism of "colloquial" writing. Guest 1footinthegrave
Scrap metal thefts could be stopped overnight, make it a criminal offence for any scrap dealer to pay in cash, only payment through cheque accounts, and a further two forms of I.D., records of which would need to be kept to tally with what has been weighed in. It's utterly breathtaking that no one has sorted this out, and probably say's more about the scrap dealers than anyone else. You turn up in a beat up old van with 2 ton of bronze/ copper/ lead,or a load of manhole covers, and they are not the least bit curious where it's come from, mmmmm Not a lot of people know that new arrivals can register to become "Big Issue" sellers, or car washers, or any manner of things, register as self employed, and claim tax credits, housing benefit, and all the rest of it, no wonder they see the UK as the land of milk and honey. >:-) but on the plus side that saves them the bother of nicking all the bronze war memorials, not that theres many of them left. What a load of idiots rule us. >:-(

Huddersfield scrap dealers have required ID and payed by cheque for a while . Remember the scrap man is normally as bent as the seller . The sale of pinched metals etc will take place outside the yard and be payed for by cash and brought in on the scrap man's own motor' , he obviously knows the goods are pinched and can pay very little for the goods . The average net salary gain in Romania was up a mere 0.3 percent in February on the previous month, to some RON 1,472 (around EUR 340). The highest salaries were paid in the tobacco industry – some RON 4,489 (or around EUR 1,027), while the lowest, in the hotels and restaurants industry – some RON 842 (or the equivalent of EUR 192). Dave225
Just to put tuppence worth in. You are being unkind to the Romanians, and I am being serious. Even Top Gear when they did a Show out there could not believe the expensive cars lining the streets. Where the problem probably arises is with the Roma who are not actually Romanians. There are about 500000 of them straddling the border between Hungary and Romania and both countries would dearly love to get rid of them. These are your cable thieves and scrap dealer merchants and come in gangs with child prostitution, human trafficking theft and make a mess anywhere they settle. They take over Big Issue slots and run begging gangs on our High Streets. Some claim they are gypsies but they are not. Gypsies do not do what they get up to. Berlusconi eventually lost patience with them and threw a whole bunch of them out of Italy, they are probably booked to come here next. Germany has some of them 'isolated' in 1 town which has become a social disaster zone. Spain is rounding up the street beggars and probably 'suggesting' they move to the UK. Of course the Bulgarians are not the same but do suffer from poverty as such so there may be a bunch of them tempted to take a bus to London. However, they also have crime, drugs and prostitution as some of their main sideline occupations. Sounds wonderful and I am sure we cannot all wait until January comes. I personally feel one of our biggest mistakes was getting rid of the Iron Curtain. By all means have a gradual integration but treat all problems at source, not here. Plus the glorious EU welcoming everyone and anyone with open arms was undoubtedly a very big mistake. Their latest statement is that there are no economic migrants in the EU. Wonder which dark room they are living in?

And you are being unkind to the Roma people (who ARE what most people would describe as traditional gypsies). We have travelled extensively in eastern Europe and met Roma people many times. It is true that they are regrded as the lowest of the low by many Romanians, Hungarians, Slovaks etc but the reality is that there are the same proportion of good, bad and indifferent among them as in any other group. I distinctly remember sitting among a group of Slovaks on a campsite who were calling the Roma every name under the sun - scroungers, layabouts, thieves etc etc and all the time these people were getting drunker and drunker the only work being done on the site to keep it immaculate was by - you've guessed it! - Roma people. We have been cheated by Roma; we have been welcomed by Roma; we have been invited to Roma parties and found it impossible to contribute because they wouldn't hear of it; we have been ignored by Roma - in other words they are the same as everybody else. Dave225
I can only make my comments from living and working in that part of the world for a fairly long time. The Governments of both countries put a very large amount of money over many years towards helping these people and found it was a total waste. They had no desire to change their ways and the ways were not quaint gypsy ideas either. In fact Hungary was delighted when both countries joined the EU as they could encourage the 'problems' to move west. We have 'escaped' for 5 years due to someone having some sense but it all runs out at the end of the year, and unless there is a replacement, we have mega problems arriving. Here in Edinburgh it is curious that we have almost no UK 'homeless' selling Big Issue anymore it is all Roma gangs with up to 3 at a time harassing people on the street. Then the women folk are to be found sitting on stools all along the main streets begging for money. It is when you see the minibus collecting them all that you know it is a gang with scams. I am more than delighted if John47 wishes to accomodate them all in his home, but personally I would rather we spent our money on the problems we have with our own people. Simple point. You know very well what I am saying, despite your diversionary tactics. You clearly have no answer to that point so you resort to personal attack. Not very original but that is what you do. PS At the last EU elections there was only one Roma MEP. She represents Hungary - for the Conservatives. An interesting point but what does it tell you about other Roma? Nothing. Judge people as individuals and you will have no problem from me; judge them as groups and I will be there.
