peter.maniac
Hi We are planning an early sepember trip to the Dolomites (and perhaps beyond) and to get a flying start are considering the eurotunnel crossing around 9pm which gets us to Calais 10.30 in the evening (a thursday evening). The issue is finding somewhere to overnight. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated be it a campsite or an aire or any reasonably secure situation. Taking Eurotunnel as it is our first time taking the dog abroad and seemed the easiest option (although we haven't booked it yet!) Peter
Geoff Bell
Have a couple of Red Bulls and you won't need an overnight stop.
michele
you can stop at the euro tunnel overnight where you book the dog in at the vets office /or any motorway within 5 minutes you will hit an aire if you dont like the look just go to the next one goodluck

Geoff Bell
Michele, 200 posts now,I,ve got some catching up to do. Peter, Get on your autoroute, aire every 15K's some full blown with all services, some just picnic areas. Park up with other MH's. We have never had a problem, but if we don't like the look. eg broken bottles, loitering youths litter etc just move to the next. I prefer to travel till dawn breaks, then park up for a couple of hours, and the roads are even emptier.

John H
Hi Peter, If you are looking for a campsite with lots of facilities, you could try La Bien Assise. It's a Les Castels site and it's about 20 minutes from the tunnel and I think it's got a late arrivals area. If you buy a Les Castels privilage card from the Caravan club you can stay on any of their sites for 16 euros per night, out of season. Details are as follows: www.camping-bien-assise.fr Have a good trip, John
peter.maniac
Many thanks everybody. We will go for it albeit no sure which option. The Castells card sounds interesting in general principle so i will go for that, in any event, to use later in the holiday or year. Peter
mike.T
There's a big lorry park area at euro tunnel by the 24hr's service station !! cheap diesel fill up before leave or you park up for the night ( you may have to leave proof of who you are before they turn on the power to the pump ! camping card will do, or visa card /passport! mind you it was the middle of the night when we crossed could be reduced staff on duty at night !! )
dogmad
Hi there, this isn't really relevant to your original question. As you're taking a pet have you seen the Dogs Away website http://www.dogsaway.co.uk/ It's really helpful and they'll send you an info booklet if you ask them (we took our 2 dogs to France last year and it was a success so taking them again next month. spartan3956
Ive stopped on the Tunnel overspill car park with the lorries but i do prefer the Ferry car park there`s more lighting and people about. Ill be there again at the end of September Pete
Mel B
Hi dogmad Good service from what I hear but it's a bit pricey at £27.00. We've been to France 3 times now and didn't have a problem with locating a suitable vet, we just did a bit of digging around on the internet before we went for the contact details of vets in the areas where we were going to be at, at the end of the holiday. If you really don't want to have to ring up yourself then Tourist Information offices are happy to oblige, some make a small charge (usually 2.5 euros, others don't). dogmad
That's some useful advice MelB, thanks. We don't yet have a motorhome but are looking into it as we like to take our dogs with us everywhere. So at the moment we're stuck with self catering when really we'd prefer to tour around and see more places in Europe. I'm finding this forum very helpful, can't wait for our 1st motorhome! peterjl
Hi Some great advise for the way out. For the way back we've booked in at Camping.LaChaumiere where the wife works at the vet and has booked us in at 4.45pm - just the ticket! This site was recommended through the this website and i have to say the experience thus far looks very promising. Peter
whisturx
Take the A16 motorway from the Tunnel.Take exit 43 to Bleriot Plage and follow the signs to the plage (about 4 Roundabouts) Follow signs for camping cars. There is an official site but on the beachfront there is an aire for 7 Euros a night. He collects the money about 9 am so most vans are away by 8 !! Patisserie 200 yds, plus restaurants. You are right by the ferry terminal so can be noisy.
peejay
A bit more of an update on the calais aire, the €7 fees are now being collected with vigor probably because its high season, a young girl checks the vans on a regular basis and slaps a bill on your windscreen if you're not there to pay. On the plus side the borne de service is now completely free whereas before you had to pay €2 extra for fresh water. A better alternative is to park overnight at the yacht basin for free and much quieter, then go back to the aire to empty/fill your tanks and toilet before the ferry. To get to the yacht basin parking, turn left outside the aire, at the first r/about just past the municipal campsite go straight over (2nd exit) then to the next mini r/about turn right (1st exit) onto Boulvard de la resistance, along to the next r/about and turn right (1st exit) into a huge parking area by the marina/ yacht basin. You will be joined by loads of other vans for the night. For your sat nav or autoroute... 50.96018N 1.84489E Pete.

BrianR
If you want more security/peace and quiet than the "aires" at Calais or Eurotunnel, there is a much cheaper campsite more or less on your route, at Oye Plage called Le Pont d'Oye. It is about 10kms East of the tunnel. Take the A16 towards Dunkerke and turn off at J50 direction Oye Plage. In 5 kms, at Pont d'Oye, turn right immediately after the bridge, along the track on the canal bank. The camp site is signed on the left in less than a km. It cost about €8.50 last year. scoutse
Hi see you are taking the dog with you .We are thinking off doing the same thing but he does not have a passport yet .WAS IT DIFFICULT TO GET IT AND HOW MUCH TIME DID IT TAKE thanks mark
peterjl
Re Dog passport The whole process takes about 7 months After the initial vaccinations the dog has to have a positive blood test (about one month after first jab). You can only bring the dog back into UK 6 months after date of positive blood test. With our vet it was all straight forward and he discussed the entire process before we committed. It was all pretty painless - i didn't feel a thing apart from a pain in the wallet. Peter
