fridge problems

What is your motorhome make and type? There is probably a relay in your m/h which "opens" one set of contacts on a relay when the engine is running and this turns your interior lights off. At the same time another set of contacts "close" turning your fridge on. The system may use two separate relays to achieve this or they may be potted together. Either the fuse has failed which supplies power to operate this relay when the engine is running or the relay is u/s. If there are two relays it is almost certainly a fuse because it is unlikely that two separate relays whould fail at the same time.

Michele ... don't think Mel E will be very happy ... he's not a lady! Anyway, when our fridge stopped working on 12v there was a relay of some sort behind the control panel that needed replacing, don't know what it looked like as the dealers spotted it on a habitation check and sorted it out under warranty. Have you done any changes etc to your van, however small, that could've upset it and caused the electrics to play up?
brianxjs - 2006-07-29 8:30 PM shall try again our fridge has stopped working on 12v while engine running........but all other 12v in habitation now STILL works while engine running.....and until today they used to switch off when engine started
Do you mean that previously the other 12v equipment went off when the engine was started, and only the fridge then worked, whereas when the engine was turned off the 12v fridge supply also turned off and everything else turned back on?  If so, the problem is almost certainly a relay (possibly two) that:

a) only allows the fridge to function on 12v, and charges the habitation battery, while the engine is running - which is normal - and

b) isolates all the remaining 12v circuits when the engine is running - which not all vans have.

Relay may be in engine bay on or in or near the main electrical control box in the 'van.  If your manual doesn't give the location you may need to contact the maker for the location of the split charging relay.  Once found, and subject to location, easy and quite cheap to replace.

If no manual, state make model and year of van and someone will almost certainly be able to offer more detailed guidance.
