kewstokeboy
Can anyone give me the 'chapter & verse' on taking a vehicle out of the country for longer than 6 months - the problems facing you on return or any ways around it? Or have I got this wrong & you can stay out of the UK longer than this, provided that ...............???? I am assuming that the vehicle is taxed, MOTed, and that the insurance is current. Thanks , in anticipation, from someone new to all this.
Go Motorhoming
The problem is not a difficult as it seems First you need the correct insurance, many policies are only 90 days. Are you only going to one country? If you are changing countries frequently you are classed as a temporary visitor, therefore no problem. It is only a problem if you overstay the temporary visitor period of any single country. Normally 6 months in any 12 month period in EU countries and will be on the paperwork given to you on the border of non EU countries. There is no restriction on registering your vehicle in the UK and using it up to 12 months abroad as long as you comply with the DVLA rules and British law. If you wish to take the vehicle out of the UK for more than 12 months then the DVLA consider it to be exported. See the Dvla Website and V526 for more information Go Motorhoming All the information in one handy book
michele
Why Can't we just sign a SORN Statement ...After all it is off Road ,Well off these Roads anyway ....Then when you get to the other contry abide by their rules..............
david lloyd
Having it taxed MOT'd and insured in this country means it is legal (temporarily) in othercountries but if you declared SORN then I suppose you would haver to register/tax/insure it another country to comply with their law. david
Go Motorhoming
This SORN thing has come up before, it is not an option, you must comply with British law to be insured and legal whilst visiting other countries. Your only other option is to export your motorhome and register it in another country. Go Motorhoming The truth is out there, as is the book

David Dwight
Hi Guys, Declaring SORN and reregestering in an other country is not that simple.Firstly you have to have a permanent address in ie, france. which also means you have to have permit of sejorn, basically you are applying to live in that country, you then become liabel for tax if there for more than 6 months. We are just looking into all this as we are thinking of moving to France and buying a small place as a base to tour the rest of Europe. And all this has to be done to a time scale. David[/QUOTE] DavidIn that case, have you investigated simply buying whatever vehicle you need in France? They are generally cheaper and have the steering wheel on the proper side for Europe. If you buy a property you'll have an address, so can register and insure in France. Drive/fly from UK to France and pick up your vehicle when you arrive!
