Like lots of others I have acquired quite a few new/hardly used items (e.g TV ariel/poles/groundsheet) which I would like to donate.Does anyone know of a charity boot sale that could use them (preferably in West Midland area).Dave R.

Hi Dave;

welcome.

I've been wondering what to do with a load of stuff that cost quite a bit; but is no longer of interest to ebuyers! and I'd rather put a hammer through stuff than give it away to a stranger!

The charity option is good, but I've not seen any that collect stuff and sell at carboots. I think it could be a possibility, just needs people who have time on their hands.

If I come across any possibilities I'll pass on. In the past I've donated stuff to our local St Barnabas Hospice shops,

Good Luck,

In Classic Car circles we have a spares weekend, where we get together buy, swap and sell unwanted spares.

All of us with Motorhomes/Caravans have probably acquired things we no longer need/use.

The cost of posting items on EBay puts a lot of buyers and sellers off now.

Perhaps it's time we organised a swop meet weekend camp! to buy, sell and exchange camping items?

Hi David;

that's a good idea, where, when and who'll make some money for charity out of organising it?

Like many people I'm sure, I have a lot of stuff that has little or no value on ebay, but which might fetch a few quid for a good cause: not just camper stuff. I'd like to find a good cause to pass that on to,

Ideas welcome

Often local charity shops are grateful for most items and worth supporting.

The charity gains;

The people whom the charity assist gain;

The person who buys the goods gains by buying at a reasonable price;

The donor gains by creating space at home/in the motorhome and knowing that others have benefitted.

I was not thinking of making money for charity out of organising - rather you being able to sell unwanted items to like minded individuals, you could then donate the money from sales at your local high street charity shop or send off a cheque to your chosen charity.

So choose a campsite for a weekend, camp, sellers display a coloured flag or some such indicating you have some things for sale, buyers can wander around the site, and visit each pitch with items for sale, maybe browsing a list of items. Could be the next big thing!! :-D

I don't know if there are any rules prohibitting sales in this manner, would need to do some research.

Hi Mel

To a degree I agree with what you are saying. The problem is with specialised camping bits is, they get donated to the charity shop, who then dispose of anything electrical unless they pay to have it tested. It then sits on a shelf for a couple of weeks and if no one buys it, usually within 2 weeks it gets thrown in a skip out the back and off to land fill!!

Have a look out the back of you local shops on a regular basis and you will see what I mean - Saturday nights you will find people retrieving stuff the charity puts in a skip to sell at the boot sale on a Sunday morning!! Grr

I have no experience of what you mention. Presumably you have some personal knowledge of how long your local charity shops keep items in stock before disposing of them and that items are put into skips and then retrieved by people to sell at car boot sales.

Our local YMCA shop has someone who can test electrical items.

Our local hospice has a number of shops - I assume that if something doesn't sell in one branch it can be transferred to another of the shops.

I can only speak from my experience - the two charities I mention, plus a YWCA shop and a hospice shop in a town in another area have always been exceptionally pleased with what has been denoted. If I wasn't sure whether the items were "saleable" I asked before donating; eg. upholstered items need "fire safety" labels.
