Your obsessed!..what does depreciation have to do with anything if happy with van and intend to keep it..any excuse not to spend moeyney more like. We only lost 4K at nearly 5 years in, on our last van and had the pleasure off a full spec, modern van in the meantime *-)

Well if you intend to keep it Eddie then your quids in ;-).............As you say you only lost 4k..........but you didn't pay UK prices did you? >:-)

I have a full spec van to........apart from...... I'll admit....... I don't have any twendy wendy lights, or a glass sink bowl or a black tile effect shower to wash in, or a heater to stop my waste water from freezing :D

Thanks Colin - any ideas of where to hire in the UK??

Not sure where you could hire a Frontier from, try checking MMM mag for hirers or indeed this site has advertisers.

Last motorhome we hired in UK was from http://www.justgo.uk.com/motorhome-range.html we hired the Rambler which is a little bit like the Frontier, even this will give you a idea of what to expect. A friend of mine has had caravans for years he decided to buy a Chieftain, he found it didn't meet his requirements at all and went back to caravaning.

Thanks everyone for more of your advice!!

Brian it must have taken you a while to type all of that information - I thank you for your time & advice!!

I have since ordered the book so will be getting to grips with terminology so I can make informed decisions!!

Just out of interest I have seen this MH (only on the net via an advert on this site!)

http://www.brownhills.co.uk/16189-fiat-autotrail-dakota-150bhp-hi-line.html

thoughts....good deal for what comes with it for the price....?

Hi chap,

Before you sign on the dotted line be sure to enter Auto Trail Leaks / Auto Trail Build Quality or similar into a reliable search engine - substitute Auto Trail for any other marque you consider.

Build quality is adequate at best across the industry. Some companies care a bit more than others.

PS, that was a short one for Brian, don't ever mention contract law... :-D

Research, research and more research. If possible go to a couple of sites and ask different motorhomers if you can have a look round, most will be more than happy to show you their pride and joy and you will get a better idea of the pro's and con's from the owners than you will from a sales person. We took this advice from somebody else in 2005, bought our van in 2006 and are still happy with it.

Thanks globebuster - so there is there a considerable amount of depreciation?? I know vans hold money better than cars??

We bought our motorhome in November 2011 for just shy of £40K. At the Peterborough Show we were offered £25K against a £87K Carthago! Either we were robbed when we first bought it, or they are no longer holding their price. We didn't do a deal as we were insulted by the offer, but another dealer said that deal is in the Glasses Eye so its spot on! They offered us nothing for the added extra's but I bet the dealer will charge the next buyer for them.

I love our motorhome, OH will have to go without his garage at those prices :D

Welcome to the Forum of conflicting advice :D

If you let us know which part of the world you are in, I dare say that members could give you advice on dealers to avoid and dealers who are appreciated by and appreciate their customers.

Being your first m/home Dealer backup is quite important, and a complacent dealer can mar the whole experience.

£40k less OTR and VAT = say £30k, PX value £25k, so difference £5k for dealer to back it up, pay for site, workshop, wages, advertising etc .... that's where the money goes.

We changed our 2010 Chausson Flash 04 at 2 years and 4 months, the Chausson cost us just over £38k including extras we'd put on afterwards and we got a PX value of £28k, loss of £10k, against a £40k 2 month old PVC.

So, on this basis of our experience, it would appear that prices aren't as good as they were when we PXed last year. Obviously it would depend on how desirable your current MH was to the dealer too.

Hi,

We are in North Essex and have seen a Bailey Approach 745 at Becks in Gt. Yarmouth. We had a look at some others this weekend gone around Newark and Nottingham but kept coming back to the Bailey.

Does anyone know the dealer? He seemed ok didn't jump on us as soon as we got there - thoughts anyone?

Mike

Not all vans depreciate at the rate of some of those mentioned. I bought my first motorhome (Autosleepers Duetto - panel van) privately at 6 months old from an advert in MMM for £25000 (knocked down from £28000) and included in the price was a number plate valued at £3500. I part exchanged it 7 years later for £21500 minus the number plate so 7 years motorhoming cost me £3500 or zero in depreciation if you take the number plate into account.

If money is a major consideration then the OP should look for a motorhome privately although the question of damp might enter the equation making the transaction somewhat risky if the manufacturer's warranty has expired but I must confess that my present van was bought new at a heavily discounted price at the NEC. If buying an older van a damp meter is essential.

I am with judge on this one. Depreciation is irrelevent if you can afford to buy a new one then jolly well do so. Life is too short to be bothered about it and anyway money is for spending etc etc

Making that first purchase is daunting.

We took 18 months to decide on a van we wanted. Do the homework! By the time we went to the NEC show we knew exactly what we were looking for. Don't know if it was the fact we had cash but we were able to negotiate a very good deal on a brand new van. So good that when I checked recently the value of the van is what we paid for it. Not that we are bothered as we have no intention of changing it in the foreseeable future. We love the van we have and the months spent looking at vans, talking to owners and pouring over the specifications was well worth it.

I wish you good hunting and I hope you find exactly what you are looking for.

What's the VAT got to do with anything? You may as well try to knock off the original profit margin made by the manufacturer. If a 'van is bought for £50K and a month later you decide you hate it, you can sell it for £45K or even more and it would be a bargain for the next owner. The original VAT is irrelevant and is just one of the many facets that makes up the retail price of a motorhome.
