We will be selling our house & travelling for 9 months a year in Europe, in a Motorhome, from next summer, for as long as we can. I take several prescription only items & would like to know how I can obtain these items whilst travelling. I have priced them on the Web & it would cost me £2000+ per year to buy them. I'm sure there are many people in this situation, what is the solution? Thank you

I hope this helps. Don

Now depending on what you are taking of course .eg I am not so sure that you could buy something like Diazepam Nitrazepam ....... BP like Atenolol would be ok because they know that you are not about to swallow the lot..........but as I said depend's if it's a heart tablet like Digoxin and Glyceral trinaitrate.... If so please be careful.........I have a sound drug knowledge ..... hence the logo

Hi, while we are on this subject, there was a item recently on the bbc news where a spokesman for the NHS was saying that they were trying to stop Doctors perscribing beta blockers to control BP, apprantly these are not the best way to control BP for the long term ?? and i think it may be worth checking with your doctors as i beleive "Atenolol tablets" are beta blockers ?? hope this helps, I used to be on Atenolol tablets I'm now using "Losartan" Hi on another point be careful if you are out of the country for more than 3 months as you can lose your right to free NHS treatment ?

We are usually out of the country for three/four months each year. If you don't tell them they won't know :-D Don

Hi, Don That makes sence the only problem is the new scheme that they are about to introduce checking people in and out of the country, or tightening up on the controls ? if it does happen then we could have a problem, If we stay for the winter in Spain we will fly home from time to time to deal with paperwork etc, so we will get our perscriptions filled at the same time ?

They will not allow us to leave the van on a camp site. They will except a secure storage area like a hire car compound at an airport. Don

Brian, We have never left the van except once in Finland but that was in a secure compound. Some friends leave their van at one of the car hire depots at Faro Airport in Portugal. They have been doing it for years. Initially they did a tour of the car hire companies and come to an arrangement with one of them. They come home for about two weeks over Christmas. I don't have any other details. Don

When did I say that you are not happy Michelle? I just want you be able to stay happy and save some money too. See how I think of you in the typical male caring fashion - if only because a happy lass is much nicer to talk to than an unhappy lass. It does seem perhaps that you do have that wonderful and enchanching female ability of being able to make two plus two equal five? So there. Oh yes........................good morning Michelle.

Sure - any colour preference? I always like to stroke a happy medium especially as due to the new EC rules on cruelty to happy mediums we are not allowed to strike them anymore!

Does anyone know if asthma medication can be bought over the counter? I am on Flixotide at the moment (and very good it is too). Sometimes I may need Salbutamol but not likely when I am away. Also if I order them can someone else (my daughter?) pick them up for me and post them abroad? Pat

Dear pat , I worked in the Medical feild for years .Why can people not just tell the Doctor that they will be out of the country for a period of time . It's no skin off his nose. Yes if you order it by repeat prescription someone can pick it up and post to you (the prescription ) It is an offence or used to be to actually post drugs of any kind through the Royal Mail ) can you imagine not yours but certain drugs getting into the wrong peoples hands. Let alone going through a sorting machine . just tell the Doctor that you will be out of the country and could they please prescribe 6months worth which is the Max or again used to be .. Ventolin or salbutamol same thing ...Generic name might be bought over the counter in other countries as mostly this is where it is manufactured .. As a cheap alternative to Ventolin.......Good luck... Oh if posted put in a thick jiffybag the one with bubbles......no good getting a neat scrip as the pharmacy will not recongnise the script in another country..... better still build your stock in advance (actually this may not be a better thing as the surgery may think that you are struggling with your Asthma and request that you go into see the Nurse or whom ever run's your asthma clinic's. We never had a problem giving our patients 6 months worth knowing they were off to sunnier climates........

I could be wrong of course :$ Don

You could be right also.....Long time since I was at it ......BUT, Not sure because your Doctor get's a fee from the FHSA every quarter for all his pateints on his book's so 5000 patient's 5000 lot's of in my day £33 . more now I would guess. I don't like to advocate cheating nor do I condone it. you could say get your script ask for (eg) 2 vetolin cash it ...Go back say you have lost the ventolin get another script cash again ..and so on... There are way's around it but that's up to the individual.
