This is only my second post but unfortunately my last. The truth will out as they say so here goes.

I was introduced to motorhoming 18 months ago by Henway (Truthfully) and we are now onto our second new van. We have travelled extensively in the UK and on the Continent and in the first year we saw all the things we would like to change and then went out and bought a new one that ticked all the boxes for us.

Like a lot of people I have all the necessary gadgets Satelitte TV, Solar panels etc but put them to good use, but also due to work commitments can only motorhome for 6 months a year but in the past 18 months have covered something like 18000 miles.I belive that is why we bought the bloody things in the first place

I also have to admit to that I have at times looked at this forum and others realating to our great hobby but cannot help being amazed at some of the “mundane sensless drival" I have read.I acknowledge that this is only a personal opinion but have never thought about trying to get someone kicked ,banned or burned at the stake for what in my case was a bit of banter.

Instead of searching to find fault with others why do we get up from the computers, laptops, IPads etc and get out and do what this great hobby is all about, having adventures.

To those who accepted the banter for what is was and responded accordingly can I say it was a little ray of sunshine to see there are still people out there who do not take this all too short existence too seriously.

In my advice about reversed polarity, which was all fact I omitted the following. The polarity of your 12 volt DC will not and never will be affected by your incoming mains.

The 12 volt DC is physically and electrically separated from the mains by fist a 240 volt AC to 12 volt AC transformer and then rectified via a rectifier bridge to 12 volt DC.The signal phase step down transformer does not know what calbe is connected to its 2 terminals whether it be Line or Neutral.

On board a ship there is no neutral and the power generated is normally 3 phase of anything from 6600 to the more common 440 volts. This is transformed to 3 phase 240 volts but the potential difference between any 2 of theses phases is still 240 volts so all lighting and power outlets have a live connection therefore necessitating the use of double pole switches.

i hope that this has explained things a bit better for some but suppose there will be some who will find fault or not be in agreement but then that is what freedom of speech is all about.

Health Wealth and Happiness to all.

Hi

I am sorry that you have had a bad experience with the forum, I find you must take things with a pinch of salt, I did not see the post that you must be refering to. Sadly some members are a bit strong in their responses, I normally just skip past them and get to the helpful ones. I do find this one of the easier forums to navigate and have had a lot of helpfull advice, even if some of the comments I have made have been corrected, but hay! that is life...

Good luck in your travels wish I had more time.

(lol)

Suit yourself - your choice - makes no difference to anyone what you do so who cares?

Whilst humour is always appreciated on here the same cannot be said for attention seekers with multiple profiles trying to make some obscure personal point without sufficient integrity to identify themselves or offer any constructive help to others.

It's a free site and a free country so feel free to do whatever you like.

After two posts gives up????

Not quite.....More like 200 under different personas as Derek rightly pointed out...Honestly some on here so naive! (not you SS)

Show me one example where a GENUINE newcomer has not been welcomed with open arms! So H if you want be taken seriously instead of continually taking the piss, drop the act, and join in the spirit of this great forum....

Ok thanks, such a shame to spoil things like that, so sad to have nothing better to do.

This is what happens on a free site it attracts a higher number of weirdos and pedants. I am a member of some paid sites and they are there although they are much reduced in number, there is a better class of

Pedants and rude posters.

This is what happens on a free site it attracts a higher number of weirdos and pedants. I am a member of some paid sites and they are there although they are much reduced in number, there is a better class of

Pedants and rude posters.

How a person recognises a "weirdo" or a "pedant" (and "rudeness" too I guess) will depend on how that person chooses to define those words.

The original MMM forum restricted itself to motorcaravanning. The forum was initially limited to subscribers to MMM magazine and was then expanded so that forum-access required a 'code' published in the magazine each month. The user-population of the forum was (as one might reasonably expect) very small to begin with, remaining quite small even after the subscribers-only restriction was dropped. Because forum members were generally well-read and experienced motorcaravanning-wise, discussions tended to have depth. I don't recall any weirdo MMM forum members and (having looked up the dictionary definition of "pedant"), I don't remember any MMM-forum pedants either. Also (and vitally) the MMM forum was strictly moderated by a Warners magazine editor.

There was concern on the Warners side that allowing a free-to-join forum to have unrestricted access would result in 'loonies' participating. In fact, when open access was introduced, mayhem resulted and only the rapid addition of a Chatterbox section saved the day.

I joined the MMM forum at the code-requirement stage and I've participated continuously since then, except for a 6-months sabbatical after the forum went open and descended into farce. During those years I can think of one forum member (Fred Grant) who chose to participate as a 'character', and one (think "Grinning Dog") whose mental stability I've wondered about. There is occasional rudeness (normally involving the same people) but, with minimal forum moderation, that's pretty much inevitable. It's important, I think, to separate deliberate and unnecessary rudeness from straightforward vulgarity - there are lots of 'blokey' forums that have a high vulgarity quotient but nobody cares, but some of the things said on this forum have been very offensive and clearly conflicted with Warners Acceptable Use Policy. On forums (free or pay) with stricter moderation such behaviour would not be tolerated.

Unless a forum has the means to restrict its members to a single 'persona', there will always be the potential (as with henway and his/her previous incarnations) for someone to operate multiple characters. I can appreciate that this may amuse the person doing it and that it could entertain other forum members, but it seems odd to keep doing for well over two years and to keep doing it so trashily (though perhaps that's supposed to be where the charm lies).

Plainly charging a fee for every forum 'persona' (as will happen with a pay-to-use website) will be a disincentive for anyone wanting to use multiple user-names but, even though this website is free, does not limit participants to a single user-name and has little moderation, I don't think its forums have (or have ever had) an unusually high number of weirdos participating. Unless you are going to claim that weirdness and pedantry are automatic bed-fellows, I don't see why there should be a greater percentage (or lower class) of pedants on free forums than on pay ones.

Just out of interest, how many weirdos and/or pedants would you say are currently participating on these forums?

One man's weirdo or pedant is another man (or woman's) friend or favourite contributor so who is anyone to say what is weird - although pedantry is easier to recognise from time to time!

What I object to is those who seek to foment trouble without contributing anything helpful or constructive but elect to take innocent, if maybe controversial, postings and choose to take deliberate offence using that as an excuse to launch an attack on the poster without offering an alternative point of view.

Twas ever thus and ain't about to change I guess?
