Comfort and the NCD equivalent

Dr Dave

Recommended Posts

If i recall this was mentioned last year and nothing seems to have changed. I have just had my renewal notice from Comfort Insurance and although the premium has not changed more than a couple of pounds and i see it as a reasonable deal I did expect to have the equivalent no claims / claim free years stated on the renewal offer but there is no mention of it. Of course this does cause problems when getting quotes from other companies as they always ask how much NCD do you have with your present insurer. I will ring Comfort on Monday to check what is going on but I wonder if anyone else has noticed this? I know it is a net based policy but if I recall Comfort was going to incorporate a statement to satisfy the requirements of other insurance companies.

Just had our renewal reminder come through from comfort insurance also, and likewise no mention about no claims discount. Telephoned up caravan guard who were our previous insurer who quoted about £80 more than comforts renewal quote, however they immediately dropped it to within £7 of the comfort quote when I told them they were too expensive, now not sure which way to go. Would like to stay with comfort but concerned about future renewals.

This January 2013 thread

http://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/No-Claims-Nonsense-/29977/

includes a posting (11 January 2013 4:44 PM) from Richard Brewster of Comfort Insurance.

In the April 2013 issue of MMM, Richard Brewster wrote:

"If customers provide proof of no claims discount at the inception of our policy this will be taken into account when we issue renewal documents, ie. the number of years NCD we show will take account of bonus earned previously. If we do not receive any proof of bonus our renewals will show NCD as whatever number of years the client has been with us."

Dave intends to contact Comfort Insurance tomorrow and it will be interesting to learn their response.

For the last couple of years I have been insured with Safeguard, having just had my renewal quote I noticed my NCD at 4 years was the same as last year. What then muddies the waters is when I left Scenic Insurance I had 6 years NCD, proof of which ( and a copy I kept ) to them.

I telephoned Safeguard for them to clarify this apparent anomaly and they said 4 years NCD is there maximum, but here's the other odd thing, they were still cheaper than Scenic with my so called 6 years NCD with them, mmmmmm

As for companies not showing your NCD on your renewal invitation, perhaps it's a ruse to hope you stay with them, I've had this before, pain in the proverbial if you ask me.

Comforts reply to my query was as follows.

In reference to your email regarding the NCB,when you came to us we did not ask for any information on your previous history of bonus.

The policy is a flat net rated policy and therefore we do not operate a no claims bonus scheme, we base the insurance on the information you provide.

The policy you have has been running since **** so to date you a claims free period of ** years.if you wish to discuss this in any further detail then please do not hesitate to call us.

This really did not answer my question so i rang around some other insurers armed with my claim free years story however rather than take Comfort's claim free years statement regarding my Motorhome they were more willing to give discount on the full no claims bonus that i had on my car. But all the quotes were either higher for an inferior level of cover or they would undercut comfort by a very small amount. One insurer who will remain nameless reduced their quote by £100 in the blink of an eye to match Comfort so i think that for me no claims discount or not Comfort is the best cover at the best price. However i think if you need a statement of claim free years Comfort will provide one but how useful this will prove to be i have no idea.

Hi

I read the comments on Comfort Insurance being net rated. I have only been with them a year and have

decided to go back to my previous insurer Lifesure so as not to be caught out by losing my no claims discount. It cost me £1 more and I now have my full no claims protected. The cost £236.40

We've just taken out insurance on our new motorhome and Comfort told us that our motorhome could not be left out on the road overnight, itshould only be out when you are loading or cleaning it etc.  thank goodness we have changed as our Euramobil was kept on a storage facility and had tobe on the road for a couple of days at each end of the holiday as it's difficult to get up the drive (walls either side and not much room) and when it is up there you had to go in and out of the cab.  it's great having the new one at home but can we all have some good weather to get out and about, please.

Yesterday, I spoke to Comfort Insurance myself.

Whether or not Comfort Insurance can provide a renewal proposal that shows a ‘combined’ number of years of NCD earned will depend on whether their records hold information regarding the number of years of NCD the person has earned when the Comfort Insurance policy was first taken out.

If you have earned, say, 4 years of NCD when you take out a Comfort Insurance policy and you have provided Comfort Insurance with documentary proof of this at that time, 12 months later (assuming that you have not made a claim in that period) it will be possible for Comfort Insurance to issue a renewal proposal with the NCD shown as “NCD = 5 years”. However, if no documentary proof of NCD was asked for or provided when the Comfort Insurance policy was first taken out, when policy-renewal is due Comfort Insurance will only know that you’ve not made a claim on the Comfort Insurance policy during the previous 12 months.

(This is what was said in the MMM letter (see my posting of 12 May 2013 10:01 AM in this thread) and it’s what Dr Dave has been told.)

I’ve not checked with Comfort Insurance about this but (continuing with the above example) if you still have documentary proof that you had earned 4 years of NCD when you initially took out the Comfort Insurance policy, it might be practicable to provide this proof retrospectively to Comfort Insurance who could then include that information in their records and show the total of ‘pre-Comfort’ and ‘post-Comfort’ NCD years on the renewal proposal.

Comfort don't actually ask for any about no claims history when you take out a policy with them so you would never know that you need to let them know to protect your record.

I have had a claim with Comfort so I assume my effective no claims will have reduced to zero and as it's a net policy their is no protected no claims.

Comfort however have always come up with the cheapest policy (for me anyway) and their cover is one of best for Motorhomes.

FYI, have just been sent renewal from Saga. Last year £218, this year £197. The have me at 70% MCDONALD'S and a reduction in premium of 10%. Can't be bad with no chasing about.

Pardon, does that mean you get a discount at McDonalds of 70% ? 8-)

Saga offers a maximum No Claims Discount of 70% and No Claims Discount is commonly abbreviated to "NCD". However, if you GOOGLE on "MCD" ("M" is next to "N" on a QWERTY keyboard), you'll retrieve McDonalds-related stuff.

"They have me at 70% NCD..." would make sense: "The have me at 70% MCDONALD'S" is certainly very mysterious.

Given that SAGA targets over-50s, offering a 70% discount at McDonalds would surely be a bad idea for their customers' health.

I have just had my Insurance renewal from Comfort and noticed it was £70 more expensive than last year!

When I rang to ask why, I was told that the increase was due to Aviva having had an increase in claims from vehicles parked on the roadside as my camper is. They also said that Aviva wouldn't insure me if I was a new customer due to this reason but were continuing to offer insurance for existing customers.

I asked about getting proof of my three years claim-free since being insured with Comfort and was told this wasn't a problem. There is an option to press a keypad button when you ring their number to be directed to the relevant staff who would deal with this.

I shopped around but was unable to find a cheaper quote than Comfort's so renewed with them.
