Guest pelmetman Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 1footinthegrave - 2013-05-14 6:21 PM I'm pretty sure along with Labours now confessed engineering of flooding the UK with immigrants, as is now acknowledged " to rub peoples noses in diversity" they would have also known they would effectively be sentencing many to either a life on sickness benefits, or the dole, as happened to many in the coal and steel industries a couple of decades ago when all those industries collapsed, and the same thing has in my view been repeated in the last ten years with an over supply of labour. I am passionate about this as I have in my family a son-in-law who quite literally has left no stone unturned to get a position, he is a reserve firefighter, but currently the only full time job he has been able to get is a cleaning supervisor on a holiday park, and that is only to the end of the summer season. No doubt he'll find himself back on the merry-go-round of failed applications, no replies, as has been the case for quite some time, and no doubt be written off by some that do not know him as a dosser when they see him at home during the day without knowing the facts. You being self employed as you say face similar uncertainty, but when I read comments, some no doubt from cushy public sector employees, one of whom on here said he "retired" due to stress in his early forties, and others happy to crow about "packing it in" in their early fifties, like a pal of mine, another public sector worker on "ill health" retirement, while at the same time crowing about everyone "choosing" not to work really rattles my cage. I've just had a look on our local job centre vacancies, there are 34. I'm not sure how many are registered as unemployed in our locality, but you can bet your bottom dollar it's more than 34. Has your SIL thought about starting his own business?...............If he does a course in decorating or something similar then it has low start up costs and can be run alongside any job he's got at the moment, ie working weekends etc, naturally he'll have to start of cheap to get the work, but once he builds up a reputation for doing a good job then the customers will return ;-).....
Guest 1footinthegrave Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 To be honest Dave, Danny trained as a retained firefighter with the North Wales brigade 5 years ago as a pathway to a full time position as he hoped for, he has gone on numerous courses, and in between has taken a number ( when he can get one ) short term ,and part time jobs. Sadly he is waiting for dead man's shoes, as even more stations are run on a retained basis, and he gets very dispirited. I only flagged up his experience to illustrate just how difficult it is out there, perhaps you could train him up in Pouffe work. ;-) But I do take your general point, and it does sound a good idea, I'll mention it to him, he could practice on our flat. :D

Can't do decorating, Health & Safety and all that. He will need a certificate for climbing ladders to show he's capable. (lol) Dave
Guest 1footinthegrave Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Quite funny that yo should mention "Health and Safety" after only being in service for a few months this is what happened to him, and no he was not the driver. Two firefighters have been injured after their appliance crashed into a field and ended up on its side, near Aberdovey, Gwynedd. The North Wales Fire and Rescue Service tender was returning to the station from an earlier incident when the crash happened on the A493 at Pennal at 17:20 BST on Friday. They were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Aberdovey fire station is crewed by retained firefighters Firefighters from Machynlleth were at the scene, along with officers from North Wales Police.
nightrider Posted May 15, 2013 Author Posted May 15, 2013 My elexir of life is my work, without my work I would have been dead and buried years ago, my dadda died in tragic circumstances at the young age of 36 courtesy of the Japanese, I was aged 9. My mamma worked and slaved to keep a roof over me and my younger sisters heads, not much in the way of welfare benefits in those days? Couldnt ask mamma for money for treats she simply didnt have it. Living in a prodominant Jewish neighbourhood there was ample opportunity for a handy lad like myself to earn pocket money to buy sweeties for me and my sister and the odd packet of 5 Woodbines for mamma. As time went by I came out of my time as a plumber, after a few years travelling up and down the country and my family was increasing I decided to chance my arm and go self employed, made lots of mistakes but learned a lot, going self employed was the best thing I ever did, some people like to work and some dont, I do. I like the knowledge that I have something in the bank, something in my wallet and change in my pockets that I can jingle to my grandkids. all my 4 kids work for themselves in one way or another, not making millions but independant and holding their own and all my grandkids are at uni and doing well apart from my 2 oldest grandsons who are a waste of space much preferring smoking the weed than going out and earning an honest penny no doubt they will be found dead in a grotty flat at some time in the future, its their choice?
Guest Peter James Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 Problem is that Benefits have to cover housing costs, which are often more than people can earn, so they have no financial incentive to work The Government has created this problem by its policy of inflating house prices.

Financial incentive , what happened to moral incentive ?
Guest pelmetman Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 There was a item on our local news tonight about farmers wanting to bring in labour from Russia if the Bulgarians and Romanians are stopped 8-)................When asked why not employ British staff, the response was basically that they won't do the work *-)...............
Guest 1footinthegrave Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Yes a load of bone idle bastards, nothing to do with 1700 people applying for just 7 jobs recently eh. Most if not all these farmers want to pay far less than minimum wage, mind you all you armchair benefit scroungers bigots would be happy to work for a couple of quid an hour, yes sure you would. You bang on about this, but like most are never banging on about corporate tax evasion,or bankers being paid off with millions for doing a crap job, no much better to kick many ordinary people when they are down, quite frankly it makes me sick.
Symbol Owner Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Bang on the button, Mike, 'Hear hear'!!!! :-) Colin.

I'm not banging on about it *-)...................I'm just saying whats being said on our local news ;-)....................but there is something wrong when farmers prefer to employ anyone other than a brit 8-)..............Also I suspect they are in league with the gang masters, as they like to have these workers living on site, so are easier to get to the field to meet the demands of our supermarkets "Just in Time" supply requirements..........and if the bloke on the telly was telling the truth he was saying many of these workers are earning £10+ per hour............he also said they bend down on average 4000 times a day 8-)........ I'd rather these jobs were done by Brits, that's all ;-)....... I also complain about the likes of Google and Amazon and have stopped using Google for advertising :D.................although it has mean't a drop in pouffe sales :->
Guest 1footinthegrave Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Dave your a funny and Clever bloke, so I'm surprised you buy into this, yes of course some need a good kick up the arsenal, but many farmers rely on gangmasters paying a pittance, so that we can buy a cauliflower for 60p. Still It's nice to see our MPs are going for a £200 a week pay rise.

I dare say there are gang masters and farmers who are ripping off Eastern Europeans as we often hear reports of that as well *-).............but I can see no reason why British people shouldn't be doing this work..............after all its not rocket science to pick a cabbage............just hard work :-S.........which is something I did do once :D
Guest 1footinthegrave Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I'm no stranger to hard work, 13 hour days ( and more before tachos ) and 3 timer shifts on the buses, and doing extra shifts "on the back" before it all went one man operation, I even did a spell of spud picking as a youth that was paid by the sack and if memory serves me was 1 shilling and sixpence for each one, what really pisses me off are the ones that shout loudest wouldn't know a hard days work if they saw it, for instance how many politicians have picked a cabbage, most went to Uni,then straight into politics then tell us we're all in it together, yes right >:-(
Guest pelmetman Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 When I married my first wife we went pea picking on our honeymoon :$ ...........came back with a bad back...........and a few quid in my pocket :D
