Given this ridiculous spat on the same name thread, should all users be registered with verifiable details so that the law of libel, defamation of character and any other legal remedies that may apply could be brought to bear. What do others think

Perhaps the site should insist that everybody uses their proper name instead of usernames.

Not much good if it's John Smith :D People don't believe I'm Michael Hunt. ;-)

I promise not to argue with anyone but if certain people couldn't have anonymity most forums would have few members.

Even for people with no business interests they'd still run the risk of some nutter seeking them out and doing them harm. There are many examples of stalkers who've traced their victim and physically assaulted them or damaged their property.

For business people the problems are magnified. Assume you have a business and partners and staff and your political opinions are very, very right wing, or very, very left wing. Many clients or customers reading your posts who have opposite opinions will stop doing business with you because you're a nasty Nazi or a stupid Commie.

Some will say that you should have the courage of your convictions and use your name but in such cases you have a greater responsibility, as you have to consider the innocent parties such as your staff and your partners.

We all remember Gerald Ratner's famous 'crap' comment. I mention this because lots of people lost their jobs when his business went downhill as a result of his silly public comment.

So, no, I don't think people should be made to reveal their identity if they don't want to. It would be a disaster for any forum.

Well if your posts on here are an example of how you appear on forums, then I guess your right to be worried that people might want to do you harm *-)...........think about it ;-)

As I said, I'm not arguing with anyone. I've put my point seriously and it's a pity that you need to attack me. I shall say no more.

Well I am quite happy to let folk know, as some already do from my various posts, and in my profile is my name, and the fact that I live in Aberdyfi, ( that has a population of around 850) so I don't see it as any big deal, sometimes I write to the local newspaper which publish both my name and location, and I'm easy to spot, as I usually wear my "support the BNP" T shirt on.

But on the wider point what exactly would be wrong with MMM who host these forums requiring registration that could remain confidential to them, but could be used for legal redress where someone is defamed, or at least could be used to block the users ip address to prevent re-registration. Mike ;-)

That would be a sensible compromise and I see no problem with it. I have no intention of my private life and home address being broadcast on the Internet. There are too many nutters out there.

But your suggestion makes sense. I don't see it ever being implemented though as forums would lose many members as so many people wouldn't even trust MMM. There are lots of paranoid people out there as well with outlandish conspiracy theories. We're seeing one at present!

Hello, I know you have a light touch on the forums, but there is a particularly troublesome individual with the I.D Had Enough, if you could take the time to look at the current thread “we is a pensioner” the issue is self explanatory, this particular person complains that others including myself are driving away people in droves from using the facility you provide, the irony being if you look at the content and his manner of posting made by this individual the irony is clear. There is simply no need for the torrent of abuse and intimidation he displays, could you please look into this as a matter of urgency, kind regards, 1footinthegrave.

Could I suggest others send a similar email, otherwise mass suicide could ensue.

I don't think it's a matter of " trusting MMM "

We often hear of companies / organisations whose ' secure ' databases have been hacked , and details ' stolen' ( for whatever reason ).

Why put ANY personal details on the net without a very good reason ?

( ... and would people supply correct info anyway ? )

Well I know I'm not alone in doing so, my banking, online retailers, all have my information, even Google have your IP address and no doubt could identify you, perhaps I should be worried ?

To be honest Dave, I can only assume he has a completely different persona in his work life whatever that is, I know I have my moments, but he is beyond the pale.

I only hope the mods send him on a very long "holiday" ;-)

But would you just give all those details out to anyone who asks ?

As databases / computerisation gradually takes over the world we can't really avoid giving this info out sometimes - but I like to be choosy.

Should you worry ? Depends how optimistic you are.

If it was a pre-condition of joining anything surely we would make that judgement, some may not be comfortable with it that's true, but those folk would simply not register, besides which I doubt a company such as Warners are any less secure with their databases than anyone else. Anyway I just posed the idea for discussion ;-)
