Guest JudgeMental
I have ordered a 12v TV but the 2 sockets in my van are of the smaller type, but I am having difficulty recognising the correct adapter. Found this on ebay..is it the correct socket please :-S http://tinyurl.com/arrpwhl
Robinhood
That's a DIN (sometimes termed Hella) socket to cigarette lighter socket adapter. It is likely that your van has DIN rather than cigarette lighter sockets, and it is even more likely that any 12v connection supplied with a TV will be a cigarette lighter plug. The odds are, therefore, very much on it being the correct adapter. Edit to add: It is, of course, fairly simple to remove the supplied plug and substitute a DIN plug, but the adapter can sometimes be a better bet, as it gives to the ability to use ANY item equipped with a cigarette lighter plug. Depending on your use, one of these can be neater than a trailing socket: http://www.the12voltshop.co.uk/Shop/din-ls-converter-rpr-c0228-pro-car.html (other suppliers exist and may be cheaper). Guest JudgeMental
yes or no would have done:D in the meantime found an old thread and seems like as you say its correct. would prefer a solid adapter but cant find one.... maybe this..its hard to tell from info http://tinyurl.com/bfu9bmt
Robinhood
....but yes or no might, or might not, have been wrong. ;-) For a solid converter, see my edit above, and search on Procar C0228.

Vernon B
Word of caution. I've used one of these adaptors for running a cool box. The additional resistance created by this device resulted in a lot of heat. Surprisingly this didn't blow the in-line fuse but the spring holding that fuse in place became soft, lost its springiness, and hence broke the connection. The cooler was run continuously and since there is very little worth watching on TV this feature of the adaptor is unlikely to present problems when using it for that purpose. Guest JudgeMental
I'm struggling here..can someone help me ID the correct adapte,r as have just cancelled an ebay order as I ordered a plug not the adapter *-) http://www.motorcaravanning.co.uk/shopuk/procar_adaptors.htm
Robinhood
As per my previous, it is the C0228. The headline description on your link describes it as a plug, but read the description of its use, and the "see also C0220" reference. Edit: the description here is even more forthright: https://www.roadpro.co.uk/retail/12v24v-electrical-products/plugs-sockets-and-adaptors-12v-and-24v/procar-12v-and-24v-adaptors-and-extensions/pro-car-din--lighter-socket-converter-plug-69.htm
hughman
Looks like you might need to change the plug on the TV - replace it with C0202 plug on Procar list that will fit either socket. http://www.motorcaravanning.co.uk/shopuk/procar_adaptors.htm Or, change both sockets to fag lighter type rather than DIN. Hmmm..but would rather not do that as an adapter can be used for other devices with cigarette plugs thanks Robin, the company you linked to earlier have gone bust I think....might just go for the roadpro or this ebay one: http://tinyurl.com/arrpwhl
lennyhb
For a TV that is going to be a permanent fixture it is better to change the plug. The sockets on the adaptors are not that good, plugs tend to work loose in them you either loose the connection or they arc and overheat. Also get the dedicated Hella plug the dual size ones I wouldn't recommend either.

Caroline
Ah now that was really interesting about heat and the spring weakening, would the same apply to an iPhone charger. I had noticed how warm it was getting and how feeble the silver button was. I did not realise there was a difference in the type of socket. Would I be right in thinking or understanding from this thread that a cigarette lighter socket is different from the ones in the habitation area, is there a way of identifying what you have where or is the heat coil a giveaway. I have looked at the Roadpro site that was recommended would this CO228 Pro Car Din be the right thing to use in the habitation area to convert a plug that is used in the lighter socket. Another thought, if you have the correct plug would it matter using the Pro Car Din converter would you do any damage or would it just be a precaution. 8-)
Guest JudgeMental
the heat coil in a cigarette lighter is in the removable plug. the cigarette socket is a bigger diameter socket the the Hella/din style ones fitted in european campers..so pretty easy to spot. if getting heat from an iphone connector examine the plug and sockets for tight fit, as I dont think this should be happening. you may get heat from a tyre compressor but I've never had heat from a phone connection
Mel B
Hi all ... be careful what connectors you buy as we have a splitter one (plug into 1 x 12v cig type socket and it gives 2 x 12v cig sockets). We were using it last night so we could watch a bit of DVD and after a while the TV said it detected low voltage and switched off even though we had plenty of juice left in the 2 leisure batteries. We turned it on again and the same thing happened about 10 seconds later. Upon taking the adaptor out of the 12v cig socket we found that the end of the adaptor had MELTED! It was supposed to be more than adequate for the TV so we've binned it and are using another one which cost us more and has never given us any problems, so be care of buying 'cheap' versions of these or any other electrical connectors. :-S
maggyd
If its an Avtex t.v you get all the fittings with it 12v transformer with a mains plug and connection lead to t.v and a socket plug with a plug connected to it for battery supply.
