Southern Germany, what to do?

In July I will be travelling from Berchtesgaden, near Salzburg, to Luxembourg & find myself with a couple of spare days (1 spare night) in between. Any suggestions for places to stop, things to see please.

We're not really big city people, so Munich & Stuttgart are not really on the agenda, museums, natural wonders etc?

It would be good to break the journey into about 200 miles (max 300) per day if possible, so the stop would be around the Stuttgart in the Baden-Württemberg area.

All suggestions welcome

Hi laimeduck

plenty of options east from Berchtesgarden.

Cut across into Austria's northern Tyrol, to Kufstein, then back into Germany at Oberaudorf then east into the Bayerische Alpen area. Also possible to veer slightly of route south to Kitzbuhel

Or stay in the Tyrol to Innsbruck through Seefeld to Garmish Partenkirken. All these are Winter Olympic venues (& you can loose all your holiday cash at the casino in Seefeld >:-) ) if they are of interest.

Germany's highest mountain (Zugspitze) is just south of Garmish Partenkirken

Many opportunities to acess mountains by Cable Car (Kitzbuhel, Innsbruck, Seefeld, Garmish Partenkirken) or Cog Railway (Innsbruck & Seefeld) plus many other "ski-resorts" along the routes, where chair-lifts will be operating.

A little further east is the mad King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein castle.

Further east - Bregenz & lac Bodensee

A few highlights, depending on your preferences.

Kufstein - Castle

Garmisch - Ski-jump, Painted Houses. .

Innsbruck - Ski-jump, Olympic Bobsleigh run, Golden Roof, Museum, Cog-railway to Karwendleberg

Seefeld - Olympic stadiums, Painted Houses

We always stop at Bad Wildbad. Inbetween Stuttgart and Strasbourg.

It is a quietish Spa town. A small mountain railway goes from the town centre to the top of the Sommerberg.

There is a pleasant park for a stroll or if heading out of town there is a mass of walking and cycling paths. I find it a very relaxing place. Often good concerts in the evening.

There is a reasonable stellplatze just on the edge of the town but we always stay at Camping Kalbermuhle which is 4 miles from the town. This place is so tranquil you cannot help but chill out, (although a bit basic) . Cycle paths start from the camp site.

Thanks Flicka & Ali!

Looks good and maybe we will stay in the German Alps and have a look at Garmisch. Bad Wildbad is perfectly placed for an overnight, so that is also good info.

We will have already been in the mountains for a few days as we are driving with friends from Chur via the Abula pass to the Bernina Pass then over the Stelvio pass to Fussen, From Fussen we go to Berchtesgarden. We are them ambling our way back to Dunkirk, and have planned to go to Luxemburg City for a night, then Waterloo & Brugge for a night before our Ferry from Dunkirk the next morning.

As stated we have 2 days & one night between Berchtesgaden & Luxemburg, so some time for sightseeing during the days.

This is all weather dependent of course - the way it's going now I may well take my Skis!

Weather forecast for the Stelvio tomorrow: snow above 1500 metres temp minus 14 deg C. That's where the Giro d'Italia goes tomorrow.

Last time I went over the Stelvio it was July and there was snow at the top and lots of people skiing.

Why not come across the other way and down through the Swarzwald (Black Forest) Plenty to see, lovely area and of course the cuckoo clocks! Plenty of Stelplatz in that area or maybe the site at Kehl am Rhein right along side the river? You can visit Strasburg from there in 15 minutes. From Kehl to Luxembourg is only about 3-4 hrs steady run.
