I wonder if anyone one here can help me please.

If you need to go into hospital for an operation can you choose which hospital you want to go to. By this I mean out of the area and go to a hospital in another county.

Please, only sensible answers.

Thanks for that Richard, no its nothing serious but needs sorting and will at some stage need an operation. The hospital we have been referred to is Boston which I am not happy about and would prefer, for personal reasons to go to a hospital in another County. At this stage we have not discussed it with our local GP, with whom I have little or no faith in whatsoever.

Hi, Sue,

It looks as though Richard has got it 'spot on'.

From my own recent experience:- Last August, I was referred to hospital, as an in-patient, by my G.P., for tests, with the severe pains which were diagnosed ( after over 2 weeks in hospital!) as this nasty arthritic condition from which I am currently suffering, but is, I am happy to say, is improving markedly (at last!).

I was offered a choice of hospital -- each about 20 miles away -- in different directions. My G.P., who we have had as our family doctor for 18 years and trust implicitly -- she is superb --suggested the hospital at which she trained and which is the one that Liz (my wife) and I have both used over the years -- both of our children were born at its maternity wing. All of that was fine, but, a few months later, I needed the services of the eye unit at the same hospital. I have had to take my old blind eye ( about which I have bored you all before!) to that eye unit several times in the past dozen years or so and they have usually treated it successfully with steroid drops. However, my usual consultant decided this time that he would not do this and gave me an ultimatum: either I agreed to let him surgically remove the eye (and fit a prosthesis) or I could: "Live with it", and just use soothing eye drops to relieve the pain & irritation. I took the latter option and also self-treated with the antibiotic drops which are available without prescription from the local pharmacy. After a week or two, this became totally unbearable and my physiotherapist ( from the specialist hospital for rheumatic diseases) said:"You must get a second opinion".

I remembered that my G.P. had originally offered the choiceof a second hospital previously, so 'phoned them, who said to either: get a G.P. referral/or come via my optician/or, refer myself via A&E. I chose the latter option, as both of the other two could have meant a considerable wait. This other hospital, which I had never been to before, in a different county to the first one I mentioned, dicovered that I had a corneal ulcer -- not noted at the earlier examination, treated it sucessfully ( still without steroids) and I still have my old eye that I was born with!

So, Sue, sorry about the length of this story, but, it just proves that there are ways of getting the treatment that you need at the hospital of your choice!

Like Richard, I hope that it is not too serious for you and that you get it treated successfully.

Best wishes,

Colin.

Thank you for your reply Colin and I'm glad to hear that you are starting to feel a bit better.

I know that you can often choose which hospital you go to within your County as we have been given the option of several hospitals for another problem :-( but I am trying to find out if you can attend a hospital of choice in a completely different County.

Thanks Sue -- my two hospitals -- although close -- 20 miles from me in each direction --WERE in different counties -- that was my point -- the first was the Royal United Hospital at Bath (Somerset) and the second was the Odstock, or Salisbury District Hospital, in my home county of Wiltshire.

Cheers,

Colin.

P.S. Sorry if I was not clear originally, Sue, I was a bit uncertain about naming the hospitals -- every hospital, (and every hospital department) is different, and we can all have different experiences, so I didn't want to put anybody off using either of them.

C.

Are you registered online? Not sure if you can choose anywhere, but I just go home from doctors log on and make a booking at the hospital of my choice. In my case if available it's at the nearest (and best) which is a private hospital.
