terry140
Hi, we are travelling to Savona at the end of June to get a ferry to Corsica. We will be travelling in our VW T4. Does anyone know if there is anywhere to park overnight while we wait for our 7.45 am ferry? Also, what route would you recommend as I am not particularly found of paying tolls... :'(

Also, what route would you recommend as I am not particularly found of paying tolls... :'( Can you let us know where you are travelling from to Savona? There are many routes but depends if you want to get there quickly or have a leisurely drive. If you have a few days, and assuming you are coming from Calais area I would suggest going through Belgium, Luxembourg (Fill up) Over to Germany, down to Basel then San Gotthard tunnel or pass if it's open, Locarno. Lake Maggiore then motorway down to Savona. (Or straight down motorway from Airolo if you don't want to visit the lake) Most of this is free except the motorways in Switzerland & Italy. (Vignette in Switzerland which is valid for your return journey too, toll in Italy)-alternative road is not a good idea in that area of Italy. There is an aire just outside Savona near the ferry port on the Via Aurelia which is the main coast road right round Liguria Via Aurelia Le Traversine 17047 VADO LIGURE (VS) It's €8 per night with electricity I think-may be slightly more now. Coordinates are 44.27751° or 44° 16' 39'' 8.44145° or 8° 26' 29'' Have a good trip Mike
Guest JudgeMental
tolls in Italy far more reasonable then France and other roads not that great..A false economy IMO We toured lakes/tuscany/Umbria last summer and had no problem parking our 6m panel van
terry140
Thank you for your replies. We are getting a ferry from Dover at midnight Wednesday, and leave Savona ot 7.45 am on Friday, so we will have to get a shuffle on! Thesuggested route sounds good and makes sense on the map so this may be the one for us .
Guest JudgeMental
you have plenty of time..2 overnights tops..... Aire @ Hans sur lesse just north of Luxembourg our usual first overnight stop on way to Italy (7 years on the trot). Superb little town with great food and beer... you have a choice between switzerland route (probably easier) or Germany/Austria. really not that much in it.....But timing everything if going via Gotthard tunnel...avoid weekends! :-D
Mike B.
Your are going to be pushed to get there in something like 30 hrs! If that is your timescale I suggest straight down the French motorway to Nice then across the riviera to Savona. It'll cost you in tolls but don't feel you have much choice If you are going midnight Wednesday that will be 02.30 Thursday before you get of boat at least and you will have to be in Savona by 06.45 Friday-doesn't leave you much time to get there. Doubt you'll get overnight stops en route Good luck Mike

terry140
More replies, thank you. My rookie mistake, we are getting the Dover ferry TUESDAY night, not Wednesday night, so time scale is not as tight as I suggested. Lots to think about over the weekend.
