Gibraltar Aire

Just a note to let users know the Aire at La Linea/Gibraltar has moved.

The former site that was the vacant area to the East of the border control on Ave Principe Asturias is no longer in use.

The entry points at both roundabouts has been blocked off with concrete barriers and no vehicle access  is possible.

The Aire has moved to a large tarmac area opposite the City Sports Complex on Paseo Juan Ayala.

Just off Avendida Del Ejercito.

GPS: 36.15895,  -5.343428

Just spent two night there and seems a much better place than the old area which is very dry and dusty.

Only about a dozen other Motorhomers, not crowded at all. Nights were quiet and beautiful days 30 degrees and sunny all day.

Altrough I can't see the attractions of the place (other than the historic) for the crowds that throng there.

The fuel booze and fags are cheap but despite its DUTY FREE status everything else is just as expensive as it is in the UK.

Even Morrisons isn't as cheap as shopping at Alcampo or Mercadona.

The beer is more expensive and meals at a restaurant are rubbish - fish and chips from the freezer and peas from a can.

We spent half as much and had more FRESH food in La Linea and a large beer and sangria for less than the cost of a pint in Gib.

Thanks for the update. I could see something was going on when I was there in February and posted this thread http://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/Motorhomes/Motorhome-Matters/Gibraltar/30284/

Tax rates are lower than Spain (which understandably upsets the Spanish as they lose so much revenue through it) and far lower than Britain.

Apparently Gibraltarians want to stay British as long as they don't have to pay British tax rates, and Britain keeps spending £billions on military installations there.

So anything that attracts a high rate of tax tends to be a bit cheaper in Gib (not a lot cheaper as the Gibs are robbing B*stards) but the difference is not worth making a special trip in for.

The only thing worth making a special trip in to see is the view from the top of the rock (where the cable car station is, not halfway up where the bus parties go) The walk up the mediterranean steps is breathtaking.

I have been twice because I have an ordinary van and park on the street or car park. If I had a motorhome I probably wouldn't bother at all as its too much hassle. I am British but wish the British would give Gibraltar back to the Spanish. If only to give the long suffering British taxpayer a break, and make Gibraltar better for us all to visit. - there wouldn't be half of it taken up with military installations and 'no motorhomes' signs everywhere.

Thanks for that Paul....is that the one with the little clubhouse, facing the beach ?Phil

Drive East past the border entrance on Ave Principe de Asturias past McDonalds to the next roundabout. Turn left onto Paseo Juan Ayala and drive to the next intersection. The Aire is ahead on the left opposite the tennis courts and piscine.

Hi Paul,

We visited this April as well, a very handy stopover for Gib. We were charged €3 for the night.

Next to the entrance and to the left of the grey container there is a manhole cover with a hole cut into it where you can empty your loo. The carpark attendant will show you where it is if you can't find it.

There is also a water tap just up the road on Paseo Mediterraneo (N36.163656 W5.338091).

Photo not as good as yours but there are some amazing cloud formations over the rock at night...

The caravaners  be a locals down on their luck.

We thought it strange at first but the Guardia Civil who patrol the site regularly don't seem to mind.

There was no attendant present on the three days and two nights we stayed.

No one else we spoke to there had been charged any fee either.

The areas is used regularly by trucks for overnight stops and the tour buses use it to park after offloading their passengers at the border.

I didn't notice any grey container anywhere on or near the site but can vouch for the tap on the beach as we rode past it on bikes.

That's strange, we were there for 2 nights and there were 2 attendants with fluorescent jackets there during the daytime and we were issued receipts for payment. One other brit who had been there for several days before us had paid as well.

Wonder if I got ripped off by some enterprising Spaniard (lol)

As to the grey container, perhaps more of a grey office/portakabin thing near the entrance, should have gone to specsavers etc etc.

Pete (€6 poorer).

The porta-cabin and blue container in the background certainly weren't there and the rubbish dumpsters were on the other side of the crossing outside the tennis courts.

Not sure if any of you are aware but they used to charge across the road on market day (Wednesday) !

Have any of you been parked here when the Market is in the street....access may be an issue then ? ?
