harry the horse Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Hello all. Off to France at the weekend. Echange rate is low, so, do you think it would be better to change our cash in France? Thanks. HTH. :-D
mel64 Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Euro 1.17 to the pound I could not find a rate as good as that? Please tell us who is giving that rate. Thank You.
Brian Kirby Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 You should get around that rate on a card, about 1.13 for cash. The best cash rates tend to be for purchases of over £500 made in advance, for which I doubt you now have enough time. You'll pay through the nose for small sums at bureaux de change. Take as little cash as possible, and use a credit card to the max. If you have one of the cards that does not charge a transaction fee, or penalise you on exchange rates, such as Nationwide, you will consistently get the best exchange rates going. Almost all of France takes cards, so it need not restrict your activities.
Guest JudgeMental Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I use these guys 1.16 today. http://www.bestforeignexchange.com/Exchange-rates-check-exchange-rates.php and use the nationwide card ( VISA rate - near on bank rate)
HWO Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 1.14 from most source's according to Martin Lewis website, without going to London No-wonder the lady behind the desk at Sainsbury's bank said I had a good deal, I picked my Euros up at the weekend and they had been pre-booked the day before at 1.18. The pound in your pocket and all that HWO
Cliffy Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 JudgeMental - 2013-05-28 6:20 PM I use these guys 1.16 today. http://www.bestforeignexchange.com/Exchange-rates-check-exchange-rates.php and use the nationwide card ( VISA rate - near on bank rate) As there is a £7.50 Insurance and postage charge, You would need to buy £500 to be better off than using a Caxton Card with their present rate of 1.142 Euros to the pound. Plus Caxton Card loads the the card instantly anywhere in the world so there is no wait for delivery and having to be at home to receive it. I was in the post office today and their rate was 1.07 :'(
lennyhb Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 AS Brian says use a credit card, we are going on Thursday we hardly use cash in France, Nationwide CC should give us the current rate 1.17 without any charges.
Mike B. Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 €1.14 to the £ on Caxton at mo-no charges or commission Mike
Muswell Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Brian Kirby - 2013-05-28 6:15 PM Take as little cash as possible, and use a credit card to the max. . I always carry enough cash to be able to pay for a tank of diesel, just in case there's a problem with the card such as it being blocked because the system thinks there is fraudulent activity..... as happened to me twice in the last couple of years, in the UK not travelling.
