bobalobs
Has anyone had these retrofitted and can give an idea of cost. When I last looked as a factory fitted extra the cost was about £75 and wish I had specified them at new.
Guest JudgeMental
This thread may be useful.....My inital thoughts were t add air assist. http://www.fiatforum.com/ducato/190627-rear-suspension-upgrade-fiat-ducato.html
bobalobs
Thanks for the helpful link Judge. Seems air suspension is half the price of two new springs. Are there any negatives to going down the air assist route apart from it seems to lift the rear of the vehicle? I am only occasionally heavily laden when on motor racing jamborees and presume for the rest of the year a reduction of pressure will level the vehicle out? Did not suppliers /fitters go to the shows and fit on site? Can not recollect seeing them recently. Is this mod no longer popular or perhaps the costs of the stands makes it not cost effective? Guest JudgeMental
Loads (get it!) of past threads on this subject..a bit more info re what camper model you have, and what the actual problem is may be more helpful to you.... http://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/search/query.asp?action=search&searchforumid=all&keywords=air+suspension&author=&days=&Submit=Search
Geee246
Hi Bobalobs Relative newbie to the forums myself having posted queries about air suspension. This was really due to the handling of my van when being overtaken by large trucks, going round roundabouts etc. Bought a Dunlop kit from Marcle leisure which I have to say was of very high quality. Fitted it myself and have since been on a 200 mile journey over the last bank holiday weekend in very high winds. I have to say that the handling of the van was so much better and I dread to think how it would have felt without them. It raised the rear by around 60mm at 3 bar pressure so not too excessive for the improvement. Also the leaf springs have regained their "curve". Also depending on your load you can add different pressure in each spring. I'm still experimenting with different pressures Well pleased with this mod so far and £414 delivered. bobalobs
Thanks for that Geee. What vehicle do you have? It does not sound that the rear is raised much.
Geee246
Its a CI Carioca 625 based on Fiat Ducato MWB. The springs were practically level although the bump stops were approximately an inch from bottoming out when empty. Fitting was easy enough if a little awkward lying on your back tightening nuts and bolts. Maximum pressure of the springs is 7 bar (around 100 psi). I've been running at around 3.5 bar which feels like an ideal pressure for me. Pressure can be adjusted dependent on your load (within legal limits of course) also you can inflate the springs individually. Was just the job for my needs. :-D
mildi
Hi We live in Hants too, added tow bar to our Adria Coral and I decided to have the air suspension fitted at the same time as we only had single springs and they we almost flat, Got it done at Armatiges in Yorkshire, best money spent, made the van much better to handle. bobalobs
Slightly worrying you had to go as far as Yorkshire to have it fitted!! Thanks for your info.
pepe63xnotuse
We've got the Dunlop assisters(from Marcle leisure)on our Renault based 7mtr CB..and they made a helluva difference.... ..and barring any unforeseen obstacles, once you're prepped up(jacks, stands, tools etc) you can fit 'em in a couple of hours, easy. I didn't bother with gauges,I just check the pressures whilst I'm checking the tyres. We did have a little bit of a faff with our Renault though..as there's a rigid brake pipe(which is integral to a hose, so can't just be "remade"),fixed to a welded bracket, right where one of the bellows needed to go. (So I go our "tame mechanic" to "tweek" that, just in case I tried it and it went t*ts up! (lol) )
