Limescale Truma 1 + 2

HymerVan

Recommended Posts

We have recently come back from a 5 week trip to Europe. Generally in the UK we don't find limescale to be a problem and the water in our locality is particularly soft.

However there is evidence of significant build up of limescale in our kettles (gas and electric) inferring that there may be limescale in our water tank and the general water system.

Our van uses diesel (Webasto Dual Top) for water heating and space heating.

We normally use Puriclean to sterilise our water tanks and containers but wonder if we should be doing anything else proactively to remove limescale and sterilise.

Truma 1 + 2 (a combined product ) claims to be the bees knees but it will cost almost £50 for two packs to treat our van.

Do we actually need to worry about limescale ?

If so has anybody used Truma 1 + " and is it effective ?

If limescale removal is indicated are there any alternative products ?

According to Truma's website for AquaStar 2, it is powdered citric acid, and is used at a rate of 500g per 50 l of water. Citric acid powder is quite widely available (for example on Amazon) at prices around £6 per kilo. It is used in home brewing and wine making. However, it would be wise to consult Webasto for their recommendations before adding anything to the water in their heater.

I use white wine viniger as recommended in the Truma manual for de scaling the Truma boiler, always use it at home for rescaling the kettle works well and only about 30p a litre in France, always pick up half a dozen bottles when over there.

A GOOGLE-search on "Webasto descaling" will retrieve information on this issue.

Entries will include [PDF] RHA-100 BA_DE_GB_IT.book that causes Operating Instructions for the Dual Top appliance to be downloaded. This advice is provided on Page 70:

"Use wine vinegar for descaling the water heater, this being introduced into the appliance via the water supply. Allow the product to react and then thoroughly flush out the appliance with plenty of fresh drinking water."

Thanks very much for these contributions. I will probably go down the vinegar route to descale the system and use Puriclean for sterilization. Webasto recommend Puriclean for "decontamination" as they call it.

Phoned Webasto technical helpline (62p per min) for advice re vinegar concentration. They say 4:1 i.e 4 parts water so 1 litre of vingear will make over 1 gallon of solution.
