robertandjean
Notice from mhf forum that some motorhomes have been broken into on two sites in Amboise. Clearly an awful experience for those involved and a reminder to us all that we do need to be vigilante. Also interesting that no vans on the aire were affected, so notion that sites are secure whilst camping-car aires are not may not be as true as some indicate! JamesFrance
I would expect a sort of neighbourhood watch scheme to operate on an Aire where vans are closer together. A lot of French sites have hedged pitches which are not so easily observed.
Mike B.
The aire at Amboise is fenced off on all sides and has a sliding security gate and even a locking gate for pedestrians-maybe this is why it's safer? It's also a lot cheaper than the site which is next door but wide open to anyone! Mike
mikeclaire
We were on the site last week for a night when it happened. They robbed quite a lot of vans and tents, the truth is none of the vans were broken into as such. It was a very hot night and a lot of people went to bed leaving their windows open and the blinds pulled down, they slit the blinds with a stanley knife and reached in and took what they could get. When I got up to take our screens off for a early start, I looked down on the far side of our van and saw a handbag, a pair shorts and other stuff just under our van, then saw that there was quite a few campers running about and twigged. We never got touched as thankfully we had our windows shut, our next door neighbours did. The handbag and stuff under our van belonged to a German couple over from us. Quite a lot of cash seemed to have been taken along with iPods I felt especially sorry for a Japanese couple camping in a tent with there daughter, they slit the tent and stole all their holiday cash. So their you go that's what happened, the police were very quick on the scene and when we left were dusting the vans for finger prints. Last year when we stayed on the site in Aug it had 2 security guards on site, not this time. Mike. p.s. the site does have security barriers and locking gate, but just like the aire it is easy to jump over and the reason the aire never got touched is there was only two vans on it and probably had their windows shut. Richer pickings on the site!!!

That said the aire at Amboise costs little different from the site, and there must be a lot of poor people about. Now back at Honfleur,to watch Armada sail past, and aire is full to overflowing with many really expensive outfits included! Same on almost all Aires we have stayed on over last 2/3 weeks, so if us Aires folk did go on site then there would be no space for the likes of you!!! Richer pickings on the site!!! Thank you Mike. Always a help to have first-hand factual accounts over second-hand reportage and conjecture. Too many folk drawing hasty, personal, agenda-led, conclusions methinks. According to the insurers, the risk of theft FROM vans is rising while the risk of theft OF vans falls. The risk is omnipresent, it matters not where one is. The only upside from this sad incident is that none of the victims seem to have claimed they were gassed! :-D
lennyhb
Only ever come across 2 incidents of theft from Motorhome, one was a friend who had his van broken into at City Europe, and the other one was on a site in Spain, woman in a Motorhome had a £1000 stolen from her handbag at night, had left the bag next to an open window, the second one I would say is plain stupidity firstly to carry that much cash and secondly leaving it in front of an open window. Yep, agree with that Lenny. Not only stupid wandering around with £1,000, but even more so carrying it in a handbag! But, unfortunately, as your post illustrates, theft will happen wherever, and whenever.

With hindsight what I witnessed last week it was a disaster waiting to happen, it was made very easy for them to come and take your stuff. You would not go to bed at home and leave all your downstairs windows open. And their was a lot of people kicking themselves after the event. It realy made me sit up and think about stuff, our van (windows closed) had stuff all over the place, laptop, iPad,wallet, phones, all left out on tables ect. The other thing I thought about was the lac of screens or blinds on the front of vans I see in France, and see this quite a lot, it must be like a tv screen for the thief . Mike. Guest JudgeMental
sometimes we sleep with window and even door open..We did in Tuscany last summer, daytime termps were 43 deg C! BUT we have a safe and use it...and window alarms as pointless disabling internal alarm so that you can sleep and lf all they have to do is force the window and taker all the valuables from the front. if people were more careful this kind of thing would not happen...thieves just know we are rich pickings and an easy target :-S
Wills Wagon
We are on the Il d'Or site at the moment which is quite busy, lots of British motorhomes and have at least one security guard on duty with a nasty looking alsatian. The aire has 5 vans. Both have the same height fencing and similar vehicle and pedestrian security. Aire £10 a night and the proper site €12, no comparision with the top class facilities now on the site. Famous last words but we feel safe. Yes we are sure the Germans have a word for most things, just as are certain there are many French words that we could find to describe your posts on this and many other threads but to be honest life's too short for such nonsense. Much better to enjoy being sat outside a cafe in sunny Honfleur looking forward to watching the sailing ship armada pass under the Pont de Normandy tomorrow. Hope you are enjoying you weekend.
