Guest pelmetman
All you need is a 12 volt supply ;-) ................and a competent auto electrician :D.............try a pm to Alib of this parish, he sold me a twin view camera which I managed to fit mostly myself with an electrician doing the last bit of connecting to the 12 volt B-)
Robinhood
Quite do-able, but the major issue with newer vehicles with a Canbus electrical system is where to take power supplies from, (for both camera and monitor) and how to switch the camera on reversing. Any mess-up with this has the potential for all kinds of electrical system problems. Any decent Car Audio installer, or Auto Electrician, should be able to do it properly. As an example of what is possible, see: http://www.connects2.co.uk/ProductInformation.aspx?id=15248&p=CAM-LR1 ....this particular camera being designed (I think) to replace the number plate lamp lens, and be almost unobtrusive in its mounting. Keithl
Poppy, Your dealer is wrong! Land Rover do a kit called 'Trailair' which includes Tyre Pressure Monitoring and a Hitch Assist camera combined in a new rear view mirror. It's not cheap but is specifically designed for fitment to your vehicle. Have a look at the website... Link to Trailair. Keith. AliB
It is fairly straight forward to fit a reversing camera. Your dealer may be refering to a built-in monitor on the dashboard which may be only possible at the time of build. An additional monitor can be mounted on top of the dashboard. A 3.5 inch monitor takes up very little room and may be perfectly adequate for your purposes. The larger monitors, 5 and 7" can be folded flat when not required. These monitors can be powered from the cigar socket or wired directly to the fuse box (preferable). Using the 4 pin cable to feed to the camera will also power the camera. No problem with CAN Bus. If using the 3.5 inch monitor and a simple camera the camera can be powered from the reversing light circuit which usually (famous last words) is not on the CAN Bus. Currently on my car I have a "Crash Cam" that records the fowrard journey but it also has a second camera that sticks in the rear window and can be angled down to look at the bumper. £49 and takes about 10 minutes to fit. PM me if you have any questions.
