Rally Air Awning Troubles

Has anyone put a deposit down for a Kampa Airframe Awning with a company called CampnShop .We did at the Peterborough motorhome show in April with delivery due by end of June after shipment arrives. If so are you doing better than us contacting this company. After many attempts they never answer the phone or reply to email for info on when we could expect delivery.

The address is Silchester near Reading and the only option left to us is for a road trip to visit face to face .

We ordered one at the NEC in February from Jacksons of Old Arley, for delivery in June. WE are still waiting, however they have said we should have it in the next 2 to 3 weeks. Hopefully despite the lack of contact yours may turn up, failing that perhaps one of the users of this forum will be able to shed light on the company you are having problems with. Good Luck

  • 3 weeks later...

We rec'd ours on Friday, we ordered on line from Norwich Leisure Camping & Caravanning. They had quoted mid June delivery but we have no complaints as they did keep us informed on the delay.

However we have had an issue, we understood the beading to be 4mm to fit our Fiamma wind out awning but we had a phone call yesterday from Norwich to advise the awnings in fact had 6mm beading & therefore would not fit directly in to our wind out awning. They have supplied us FOC with a double sided tape ie 4mm & 6mm with the figure 8 infill. We have tried it & it seems to work but as the motor home is parked on the drive at the moment will have to see how the whole thing works together when we actually take the van out.

Not ideal as we did expect the awning to fit direct in to the Fiamma wind out. Although Norwich have been very obliging & if we are not satisfied will take it back.

Has anybody else had this problem? As we understand there were 100 pre ordered nationally & they all had 6mm beading.

Hi We saw one on a site in Malvern and had a look at it. The couple were delighted with it and said it just took 20 pumps and it was up. It was on a caravan and they had an Isabella awning at home but much preferred this one for ease of use. They also recommended Jacksons of Arley.

Just checked ours and its the 6mm beading that fits our Omnistore OK...

Yeah,I was going to mention that the Omnistor was 6mm..

You'd think that it'd be easier for stock levels and dispatch if they just fitted them with both 4 & 6mm beads...!? *-)

I assume it only has 6mm beading as the main purchasers will be caravanners and the standard size of the awning channel is 6mm.

It wouldn't be difficult to actually sew the extra 4mm piping strip on as well (careful not to 'puncture' anything though!) - you can get it with just this on one side, rather than the double sided stuff:

Re the instructions, If you go on to Kampa website & click on to Rally Air awnings, you will find there is a 12 page instruction manual.

We have had our awning 2 weeks but not had chance to try it out yet. As previously stated we now have the figure 8 kit, supplied FOC .

Has any body, who has the Fiamma wind out awning & the Motor Rally Air awning used theirs yet & if so are they happy with it? Also you guys who have the Orminster, which has the 6mm channel, are you pleased with your purchase?

Mel, just a comment , these Motor Rally Air awnings are specifically designed for Motor Homes & SHOULD have come with dual beading to fit either 4mm or 6mm. If we start trying to sew it we won't be able to return it if not happy which the retailer has advised we can do & think the figure 8 kit will give us a stronger attachment.

Hopefully we will be pleased, as our style of motor homing is to set up camp, if we like a place & use electric bikes & public transport to get about.

We have the Vango Airaway equivalent and the Vango web site has an excellent video showing how to attach to an F45 with a 4mm/6mm Kador strip and figure of 8 profiles.

The only problem we have is that there is no means of preventing the awning bead sliding from side to side so that when a really strong wind blows from the side it forces the awning along the strip and can pop the bead out of the figure of 8 profile. The only solution I have managed so far is to use the throwover strap provided to anchor the corner to the F45 casing.

Otherwise an excellent awning, withstood gales and torrential rain, easy to erect and pack away way superior to the heavy and cumbersome Ventura driveaway we had previously.

We use it on a Ducatto LWB van conversion. :-D

Kampa Rally Air WARNING

I first posted with Out and About Live on this subject requesting info on a company called CampnShop who we had ordered from but had communication problems. This is now resolved and we collected the Rally 390 L a few days ago.

The warning is due to the fact that these awnings have a fixed ground sheet incorporated into all four corners which needs to be flat on the ground for the correct awning profile to be achieved. Therefore to try to extend by up to 20cm is not possible. There are two types for sale,a two window or three window size with heights (from awning rail to floor) of 250cm extending to 270cm (L) , 270cm extending to 290cm (XL) both with 6mm beading. After our first effort to erect our (L) it turned out to measure only 240cm ! The salesman explained that Kampa are aware of measurement mistakes and would refund in full but not exchange to a XL just incase that also did not work for our van.Our dealer said he would exchange but not take it back.We were keen to own this new type of awning so decided to pay the extra and gamble that it would work for us.

Our van height is 260cm (rail to floor) so by using the low yellow ramps we can easily increase this to 270cm and after all we all use ramps often anyway. This worked very well as we will always have the groundsheet sections flat to the floor and we are very pleased with the end result.

Therefore from our experience you can always increase the vans height but not shrink it ,so if your van is under 250cm go for the L if it is under 270cm go for the XL.If it is over 270cm then as far as I can see don’t buy one.

Thanks for that, have looked at the ITune video. As we haven't taken ours out of the bag yet the kader & figure 8 tubes seem to do the trick as per the video & it does look to be what we wanted although ours is a Kampa & was expecting it to attach directly in to the wind out awning, hope to get out next week to try it out. *-)

I only suggested sewing the extra beading on once you were happy with it to save you having to use the kit all the time, not before.

I've just read the 'warning' posting above and if I understand it correctly, it seems that these awnings are 'sensitive' to height and ground levelness (is that a word?), so I would be a bit wary of having one and expecting it to work perfectly on all campsites.

these blow up style tents were all the rage 30 odd years ago but disappeared from view because of problems...cant see them withstanding the winter winds in Spain.....

Due to the flexibility of the air tubes you can use it on ground that slopes up or away but the critical measurement is the part that goes up against the van.It will be 250cm or 270cm ,so increase the van height with ramps is the best option.Of course you may have a awning that comes out of the factory at a different measurement as Kampa are just becoming aware they have a problem with measurements.Ours should have been a 250cm but came out as 240cm.

We had ours set up in fairly strong winds but the guy ropes did the job well and some flexibilty in the frame work may be a good thing rather than rigid construction.Something like a building that will move slightly rather than fight the wind ?

If you google Kampa porch awnings & then on their website click on news, there is an ITune video. Alternatively if you google Vango , ITunes will also come up with a video for air porch drive away awning.

We have our fingers crossed that we won't have a problem with the height as per a couple of posts on this thread. *-)

No trouble with our Vango Keela, perfect height for a panel van with Fiamma F45 and withstood high winds at Exmouth earlier this year. It also works well as a freestanding awning if needed. Have no problems taking it to Spain this winter having experienced Costa Blanca gales on previous occasions. Vango have been making tents with this technology for 3 years now and claim to have wind tunnel tested these airhead tents and awnings. :-D
