we have usually stopped on a layby with lorries, but you don't get a good nights sleep - all the rocking and rolling (from passing traffic I'll have you know)! Not going to do that this year, we are getting away earlier from Grantham for a change and I have booked us into a cc at Swingfield Minnis on the A260 which runs between the A2 and A2 - probably 12 miles from Dover. Mrs Godden - 01303-844381. I have booked 'cause it's the Friday night of the Aug bank holiday weekend, and we won't get there till about 9pm, she was happy with this, just turn up she said, and give me a ring if you can't find us. I can't recommend this site as we haven't stayed there before, minimal facilites - need your own loo etc. And it will be cheaper than a mucky/noisy service station. Our ferry is at 8am the following morning and she is used to people heading off at the crack of dawn. So instead of sitting on the dock at dover trying to keep our eyes open, we will be bright and bushy tailed for our crossing (lol) well that's the plan! Anyhow, it beats Maidstone or Medway services. We always park on Marine Parade at Dover, quite a few other 'vans do. We've never had a problem and always get a good nights sleep and it's just a couple of minutes drive down the road to the port in the morning. Just remember to be courteous where you park as there are quite a few flats along there - try not to block their view or be inconsiderate so that they continue to allow us to do this. It's lovely to watch the ferries going in and out of the port with all their lights on in the evening and to see the sun on the sea in the morning. It's also lovely to hear the waves hitting the shore at night, very relaxing and a lovely start to the holiday. We usually get up at least an hour before we're due to sail out and give the dogs a good walk on the prom, then going to the port about 45 minutes beforehand, get booked in and parked in the 'loading bays' and then have breakfast (cornflakes) and a wash, give the dogs another quick potter and then onto the boat. No rushing around, getting stuck in traffic etc, nice and easy-peasy! On our return we usually get the 19.30 (French time) ferry back, arriving in Dover at around 20.30 (British time), scoot around to the chippy, feed our faces then back onto Marine Parade for the night, setting off no later than 8.30 in the morning so as to be gone before we can cause the locals any annoyance. We'll be there on Friday 25 August evening (getting the Saturday 8.00 am ferry out) so if anyone want to 'join' us for the night on the sea-front come and say hello, we'll be in the Rapido 709F.

Before you go too far with your overnight stopover arrangements, you may wish to follow this link.

Dover has changed its parking orders with effect from May this year.  The link will take you to a .pdf of the new orders.

It seems motorhomes will not be accepted, generally, in the town's car parks since the stipulated vehicle sizes for all parking areas appear to exclude them.  Forewarned is forearmed!  http://www.dover.gov.uk/parking/2006Order13206.pdf

Good luck!

t.gray Postcode: CT16 1LW If you are wanting to use Sat Nav, you need to set it for Wellesley Road, Dover as, if you are travelling East to West this is where you need to turn off Townwall Street (A20) which is the main road, to go to Marine Parade. Alternatively if you're travelling from West to East along Limekiln Street (A20) turn right at the roundabout into Union Street and then left into Esplanade which runs along into Marine Parade. Note that the A20 Limekiln Street and Townwall Street run into each other, so don't get too confused if you suddenly find the name has changed! MikeP - Yes it is by the sea ... Marine Parades in my experience usually are! Unless anyone knows differently of course?! If you want to see where I am on about go to www.multimap.co.uk and type in "Marine Parade, Dover" (without the quotes).

If you want to park at Dover to catch the ferry why not go over on an evening sailing and park on the Calais ferry port car park. Scores of outfits a night do this. You will have a fresh and early start the next morning in addition to saving hours on getting over, BST,etc, etc.
robin - 2006-09-22 1:39 PM Has anybody stayed at the Marine Drive parking since this - Is it still free parking from 1700 - 0830 with no height or width restrcitions (?) :->
We stayed there (with other motorhomes) on our outward trip in early June and on our return in early July as usual and had no problems. Visiting other forums I have seen no mention of any change in the position.

We parked on Marine Parade on Sunday 10th September, ready for an early boat Monday morning, and then again on this last Monday, 18th September, after getting a late boat back in. All seemed OK other MHs parked there - both UK and Foreign registered, no trouble or complaints. We have always overnighted there ever since starting to use Dover port some 18 or so years ago now. Hope this helps. Happy travels, Ian

The caravan and camper parking signs are still on the lamposts at the Hoverspeed/eastern end of Marine parade. We were there a few nights ago without problem. Police patrols pass regularly. Further down Marine parade (residential part) caravans and motorhomes are banned from parking overnight and have been for years. Saying that, there always seems to be 1 or 2 down that end, so the police aren't that bothered. Voxy
