ips
After much deliberation mrs ips and I have decided to go back to a caravan. There are various reasons for this such as the type of holiday we now do, the extra comfort and room that is available in a caravan and the use of a vehicle once sited being the main ones. We had a last look at vans at the Cheshire show on sunday but could not find anything suitable so off we went to Campbels at Preston and got a very nice brand new special edition swift with a good trade in deal. I have to say they are a very fare and very good dealer thus far. Our maiden voyage is in 3 weeks for a 5 day hols at Keswick so will report back after that. Off to look at awnings this weekend. Tracker
Very best wishes Ian and I hope it all works out for you. Don't leave us just because you have been 'converted' - after all there are no right or wrong ways to holiday - just different!
ips
Many thanks Tracker No worries I intend to still stick my oar in :-D The info on here has been very useful over the years, and the discussions (some heated) have been most interesting and enjoyable, so you wont get rid of me that easily. Guest JudgeMental
Yes dont go anywhere!.........As you dont venture abroad maybe it makes more sense for you :-D
ips
Judge yes that was indeed a consideration. We had every intention to do the france thing at some point but my business comitments are such that more than a week away is out of the question for the forceable so as you say at this time taking all things into account it is the right move for us. Mrs ips has always preferred the layout and comfort of caravans and IMO unless you go huge you just cant get the same in a MH. Also I hate busses :)
Tracker
If you are going to Keswick don't forget your liferaft and your winch as it is one of the wettest places in England!!

Ian Why didn't you get a van that was big enough without an Awning ? When I caravanned it was always 'putting up the awning' that put me off, and caused more rows with the missus than anything else. Why not try one of those 'inflatable frame' ones, they look a bit more 'User friendly' ? Anyway, good luck, I must admit that my 3 months away in the west country this year wasn't as pleasurable as last year in the Hebrides, even though the weather was nice in both places. Britain seems to be getting less tolerant of motorhomes rather than 'more', which is strange considering the plight of many Tourist destinations. happy caravanning ! (if you flash your lights I'LL still wave at you !) (lol) Ray
lennyhb
At bit extreme but good luck. As Eddie pointed out you don't do foreign so probably makes sense, on a CS at the weekend I said to the misses could you go back to a caravan she agreed with me no way. Apart from the odd weekend & a few festivals we have given up with the Motorhome in England just too much hassle & being on the South Coast easier to pop across the water. ips
That's a fare point. Well first off I have had many vans in the past and I prefer the ease of towing and storage of smaller vans. Secondly I recently changed my vehicle from a 4x4 to a citroen berlingo multispace XTR (which is for business as it has van like storage and an excellent bit of kit and 50mpg) so was restricted to towing capacity. Only the two of us now so plenty big enough. I know what you mean about awnings but having watched many folk try and put them up it seems to me that they make a meal out of it. Our tent background means we can put one up or down within 10 mins no problem :-D

rolandrat
I know a few people who have gone back to caravans and Campbells always seem to offer a good trade in price for a motorhome. New caravan plus a fat cheque in exchange that could be used for a good tugger. I think the guy who specialises in the deals is called Neil. Not met the MH bloke as the caravan bloke just rang through to the MH depot with details and came back with a VERY good offer compared to the insult of an offer I received from another dealer. So far a VERY good dealer experience.
Bulletguy
ips - 2013-07-25 10:26 AM After much deliberation mrs ips and I have decided to go back to a caravan....... . Ian Each to their own as they say Ian. As for venturing further afield which I understand is out of the question for you due to work commitments (ooooh i remember those days!), I met a retired Dutch 'tugger' couple in Albania. They worked for ACSI as "Tour Leaders" and were mapping out a route. I was amazed when I found he was 70 years old! Even more so when they told me the countries they had worked in for the UN which he joined after retiring from the RNLAF. Enjoy your 'tugging'! :D
Dr Dave
TRAITOR! :D Don't forget the solar lights for the awning and a flag pole will you ;-) If the car / caravan combo suits you better than a motorhome good luck to you. I suppose it will suit the missus better less walking and all that. Dave
lennyhb
And the huge full size gas B-B-Q like the tuggers we saw on the CS at the weekend. I am sure all tuggers are at least 200% overloaded, but you know better now Ian from your Motorhome experience.. (lol)
ips
Ha yes we got the solar lights already. This thing has external gas point so could have huge bbq thing :) Also got super pitch thing which i don't really know about yet. Seems to have lots of things that my caravans from 10 plus years ago did not so looking forward to a play. Oh just thought must tell lynn to get some fake flowers in a pot for front table oh and better get a dog too. :)

Mel B
Oh no ... another defector from a Flash 04 !!!! 8-) I can totally understand why you're changing though ... you're getting old and knackered and can't get up into the bed any more!!!!! :D :D :D :D As for getting an awning, I'd suggest having a look on Ebay or in the local newspaper ads as you'll surely find something there and, if it doesn't suite, you won't have lost much, then if you really want a new one at least you'll know which you want ... we know someone who went through 3 'new' ones in as many months as he just didn't like what he'd bought, cost him a packet! *-)

Have you thought of using your drive away awning on the caravan? As for silver screens, stick them on the 'Buy and Sell' section of this website for free. ips
Hi your right about the bed yes considered using the drive away but really want a traditional posh new one. Got a big wedge left over from deal so cost is no issue.
AliB
Mods, please remove this thread. If Mrs B reads this the pressure will be on for us to follow Ian. The main reason she does not like the motorhome is the rear seats are not very comfortable. We have looked at other makes but they seem to make the rear seats more suitable as a dinette than a travel seat. Although not going anywhere at present, had to cancel our trip planned for this Saturday as the cat needed an operation. Ian, if you have any spare in your wedge pass it over. It ain't half expensive rearranging a North Sea car ferry at 2 days notice!
ips
Ali yes the seats were an issue for Mrs ips i was nice and comfy spread out on front seats with drivers reclined but dinnete not good. Bed access also an issue. There really is no comparison comfort wise between our particular mh and the new van. Sorry can't help with the wedge. Ha. Its a novelty buying something with 10k cash back.
