mac111051
Thinking about cycling the Stelvio Pass at the end of August on Stelvio day when the pass is closed to all traffic except for bikes, Google maps show the route as Reims, Strasbourg , Basel, Zurich, Davos, is this the best route, have found one site, camping Kiefernhain in Prato, any one used it or any other suggestions Thanks Mac
nowtelse2do
mac111051 - 2013-07-30 5:09 PM Thinking about cycling the Stelvio Pass at the end of August on Stelvio day when the pass is closed to all traffic except for bikes, Google maps show the route as Reims, Strasbourg , Basel, Zurich, Davos, is this the best route, have found one site, camping Kiefernhain in Prato, any one used it or any other suggestions Thanks Mac Malc, give us a bit more info please. Why Prato? that's near Florence unless there's another one nearer the Stelvio. I'm assuming you are an excellent cyclist and very fit (you will need to be) If this is an organised event you will most likely have to have a medical certificate to show? Professional cyclist's have died on these pass's. Is the event starting from the North side or the South side? The Stelvio is 2758mt's = 9,048ft high, after about 4,500ft the oxygen (air or whatever) starts to get thinner and you are only just over halfway up. There are campsites in and around the Stelvio, North & South. OK, over to you. ;-) Dave
mac111051
Hi Dave, yes I am a serious cyclist having climbed all the major cols in the alps and the Pyrenees, getting older and slower but I get there in the end http://www.valtellina.it/eng/info/10195/stelvio_bike_day_bormio.html
nowtelse2do
Hi Malc, well that answers the Prato query and the others. The route suggested is probably the shortest but there are tolls all the way through France if using the Motorway, you then have to get a motorway pass in Switzerland. Look for a thread lower down, someone started one just a few day's ago. Dave
nowtelse2do
Malc, some info on page 5 about French Motorway tolls and on page 7 look for 'Go Box For Austria & Switzerland.' Robinhood's post is very good and should tell you what you need to know if you decided to go that way. Dave
nowtelse2do
Hi Mac,.....keep calling you Malc :-S Just remembered, if that route from Davos is taking you over the Umbrail Pass you may have a problem. The pass was/is closed during the week due to extensive road works although it is open at weekends. I was over it in early June and there is a long stretch that they are repairing. You would need to check. Dave
