Advice on Emissions zones along the Rhine wanted.

We are spending September following the Rhine from Dusseldorf down to the Mosel. We only have a yellow sticker so suspect there will some no go areas for us,

Any one got some tips for getting round them and anywhere that will definitely be a no go areas,

We like to park up and use bikes to get around on, so I expect we may have to stop outside some towns and ride in.

Umweltzones along the route you mention appear to be Dusseldorf, Koln and Bonn, see....

>Umweltzone Map<

For further information on each individual zone area and which colour stickers are accepted, see...

AFAIK, in the particular are you describe, the currently established Umweltzonen all still accept a yellow sticker (this will change next year, however, and much of Germany elsewhere has already moved to a green requirement).

In any case, public transport in Germany is of such a standard that we generally find it better to visit town/city centres using that, rather than trying to drive in and park (though cycling is often a good option as well).

Its also interesting to note that as the country gradually moves toward an all green sticker access requirement (afaik I don't think there are any left where a red sticker is now accepted) some stellplatze have been granted a 'sticker free' access corridor, Koln being one...

A further bit of info, follow the link below for Stellplatze within or just outside zones...

http://www.reisemobil-international.de/aktuelles/umweltzonen/

Roughly translated by google...

First list is Cities in which at least one stellplatz is located in the green zone. Access is only possible with a sticker.

Second list is Cities with environmental zones where the stellplatz is either just outside the environmental zone or if within the zone has a designated sticker-free access route.

Third list is Cities with environmental zones, but without any stellplatze

Yellow Umweltplakette is accepted in all German umweltzones until June 2014

Phil

Sorry, that is incorrect, if you look at the map I linked to, there are many zones that will only accept a green sticker.

Thanks for all your help. It looks like I have timed my visit just in time before they go to green zones.

We are looking forward to spending some time in Germany, in 4 years we have been motorhoming we have only passed through on our way to Italy. I worked for 3 months in Hamburg in the 1980s, it will no doubt have changed a little bit since then.
