CliveH Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 There is a thread that suggests Chatterbox be shut down. Was this the agenda of the trolls all along? I do wonder. :-S This article gives some insight into their thinking:- "Trolls divert online discussions into non-productive, off-topic venues. They pose as part of a community only to disrupt it. Trolling is anti-social behavior. Some of the techniques trolls use to accomplish their objectives are: Pithy put-downs Name-calling and insults Ad hominem attacks that try to negate an opinion by alleging negatives about the person supporting it Impugning other's motives Emotional rants Bullying and harassment Completely off-topic posts Posting inaccurate "facts" (wow! - anyone we know????????) The traditional definition of trolling includes intent. That is, trolls purposely disrupt forums." ------------------------------------------ I think the call for Chatterbox to close is the wet dream of a troll. It seems that a lot of us are migrating elsewhere.

The answer is I believe to carry on posting constructively, but to ignore completely any post that is obviously designed to be inflammatory, or starts to descend into the egotistic childish bunfights that as become the norm on this forum of late. Bad manners are bad manners whoever posts them, and are the very thing that attracts the Trolls to a site and ends in an downward spiral to it's extinction. The best antidote to the poisons injected to the the site by the trolls is an influx of posts by the the people who made it so addictive originally, and not to walk away from the fight and leave the battlefield to be picked over by scavenging trolls, or bad tempered egotistic posters who have little better to do. Just my opinion mind, to which you are entitled to respond with yours in a reasoned well mannered way.

John 47 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 As a firm believer in free speech I am opposed to banning anybody or pulling any posts. That is one of the prices you pay for free speech - every idiot gets to take part. If you don't like what is being said then ignore it. It seems to me that Yosser is achieving exactly what he wants to achieve - everybody is talking about him. I, like most people, find him irritating and offensive but this is the first and last time I have ever allowed him to take up any of my time. The answer doesn't lie with the moderators; it lies with the rest of us.

I agree and this is what I have been saying for several days - by talking about him and not to him and responding only to everyone else and not to the troll he gets really irritated and posts all sorts of rubbish which we can all laugh at but not respond to in any way. It's quite satisfying to see him squirm! That said free speech does not include the option to insult or abuse others unless in response to unprovoked provocation - and that includes using the deliberate misunderstanding a post as an excuse to attack.

Indeed John - I also do not believe the answer lies with the moderators - one of the great things about this Forum is its light moderation. Other Forums can have "Forum Police" that object if comments/posts go even one iota "off topic" and as such those Forms descend into mediocre threads moderated by mediocre people. One good thing on here is the ability to let a thread run - most do that sensibly - if it is to continue then we all have to make sure that common sense, civility and maturity become the norm.
Symbol Owner Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Whilst agreeing with everything that Tracker, John and Clive are saying, I do believe that , in certain rare circumstances, that there are exceptions and that this is one of them. Why should we all have to manoeuvre around this bar-room bore/clown? If he came into a real '4-ale bar' with his posturings, threats and rudeness, he would soon get his 'comeuppance' -- hopefully from a 'bouncer' or two. 'light-touch' moderation is all very well when we all know and respect the rules -- when we have a social outcast of this magnitude among us, something heftier is needed methinks, which is where we ought to be receiving protection from the 'bouncers'/Mods. Colin (aka 'disgusted' of West Wiltshire!) P.S. Perhaps Dave (pelmetman) can cheer us all up with another instalment of his ongoing (and witty) saga: "Mr. W and the goblet of pork" C.

Why should we all have to manoeuvre around this bar-room bore/clown? C. (aka 'disgusted' of West Wiltshire!) I understand how disgusted you feel Colin, as I did too a day or three ago, but the troll is not really a problem if you adopt the attitude of mind that it is not real but an illusion! Everyone else continues to communicate with each other and whilst we can choose to talk about the troll if we are so minded we don't have to communicate directly with it, so on balance I don't really see a problem. One of the characteristics of a lightly moderated forum I guess and I too would rather have this that the straight jacket of some other forums!

Mrs T Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Who remembers the Fiat problems and all the rough words that were passed back and forth? The only one to benefit was Fiat itself with all the free publicity. The same situation arises on these forums regarding who is flavour of the day or not, the only benefit is to the few who like to see their name publicised. Many of you are guilty of fuelling someone's ego by repeatedly nagging on about it. Tracker is one of the worst, hiding behind his theory of 'its just good banter', another name for it is s***t stirring of the highest order. Yes he is informative and mostly very helpful but very he is also very good at undercover criticism which he insists is simple banter. Having been a listening only forum member for many years I have no truck with those who continually stir just for self satisfaction cos that's all it is, for they are actually life's weaklings. No doubt he will make a comment and agree as only Tracker can but unfortunately he will never learn the art of shutting one's mouth occasionally. I'm not interested in publicity on here so whosoever wishes can send me a PM which I will read but I will not respond to.
