Peugeot V Fiat

In terms of customer service, neither rates as very good in my experience, but Peugeot are the better of the two. If in doubt, have a read of any of the reliability surveys conducted by the likes of JD Power and you will soon realise that compared to Japanese and (some) German makes both are rather poor.

The products are OK, but FIAT in particular are living in the Customer Service Stone Age (for any further proof read the very extensive "Juddergate" postings).

Ford!

with 140bhp

The 2.3 Fiat is now 150bhp.

......well yes, ....as an option over the 110 or 130.......(and it's actually quoted at 109KW, which is 146bhp or 148ps)

By the same token, the EuroV 2.2 Ford engine can now be had in a RWD Ford Transit with 155ps.

(the 2.4 engine has been discontinued in the RWD Transit, and the maximum in a FWD Transit is still 140ps which is actually 138bhp)

;-)

Hi, I would like to know from owners of the above engined motorhomes good or bad, which is best, 2.2 or 2.3 130bhp. Look forward to hear the opinions.

Thanks.

The 2.2litre HDI motor fitted to X250 (2006-onwards) Peugeot Boxers/Citroen Relays is a variant of Ford's "Puma" powerplant with chain-driven camshafts (hence no cam-belt to wear, change or jump teeth in freezing weather!), whereas the Ducato's 2.3 litre motor has a timing belt (with a cam-to-cam chain). If one believes that cam-belts are the invention of the Devil, this difference may be considered significant.

Either is a decent engine for a 3.5 ton motorhome. I wouldn't get hung up on which is the best engine as most people won't notice the difference. Fiat has the comfort-matic as an option on new vans. I have the 2.3 and it is a joy to drive, so much better than the 2.8 which I thought was great and which was an improvement on the 2.5. I've had 4 Fiat motorhomes and all have been well suited for the purpose.

Fiat is overwhelmingly the dominant base vehicle in the motorhome market, with most of the top end vans now appearing on the Iveco. Fiat/Iveco produce models specifically adapted to the motorhome market. Some of the Fiat Professional garages take a particular interest in motorhomes. Overall, there is a lot of knowledge for you to call on should you have problems with a Fiat. Its problems with the motorhome variant are well documented on forums and do not reflect well on it. However, bear in mind that there are simply many more Fiat motorhomes so some perspective is required.

Fiat is also a major player in the commercial sector. The Peugeot van is the peak of Peugeot's involvement in the commercial market, the Fiat involvement ranges up to the 44 ton Iveco trucks.

Unless you live near a Peugeot garage that has a good track record of maintaining motorhomes, you will probably find ownership of a Fiat easier on a day to day basis. However, my advice would be the buy the van you want and be less bothered about the engine - unless you go for the brilliant Merc.

That is a well balanced and fair contribution Brock.

We have found the customer service offered by Ford to be severely lacking for commercial vehicles and not one of my customers that has Ford's would ever buy one again. I say this not to put anyone's back up but because it is a fact that Ford have their problems too and are of the variety that ends journeys prematurely rather than judders or smoke.

Since the same Ford engines are used in Peugeot vehicles, it is reasonable to expect similar problems with the French badged Motorhomes. The Peugeot network of specialists for campers or commercials is less extensive than that of Fiat and while there are some awful dealers out there; there are some very good ones too.
