Tracker Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Perhaps this posting, copied from another thread, may be better suited to a new thread? Perhaps it is time for this forum to change? Perhaps access to the forum should remain free but, and I don't know about everyone else, but in the light of current trends my views have changed and now I would happily pay £10 a year to be able to post and contribute if it prevented the dross from trying to disrupt? There is maybe a case for exempting those with a long and proven track record for helping others by awarding a free lifetime membership - and I do not include myself in that very small group!

Well something has to be done Tracker. When you have those who see nothing wrong in manipulating multiple personalities to post bile and vicious attacks on people then for the average Jo(e) the site just becomes a battle ground. I have always stated that I like this site because it is open to all and that the moderation is light. Some Forums have over rigorous thought police who jump on you for just wandering off topic!! Think how that sort of "control" would affect the wondrous "banter" that we enjoy (enjoyed (?) ) on here. As for a fee - I personally would have no issue but I think it would put a lot of people off. So sadly - my suggestion is simply increasing the moderation levels for a while to damp things down a bit and see if that improves things.

Tracker Posted August 16, 2013 Author Posted August 16, 2013 Even I don't expect MMM moderators to work 24 hours but a way needs to be found to eject the dross asap which includes outside of working hours.
John 47 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Why bother? In the real world, if you don't like someone you ignore him. Just do the same here and get on with your life. In recent days, there has been nothing on Chatterbox except people complaining about a certain individual whose aim is clearly being achieved - and he is a lot cleverer than people are giving him credit for. Just look at the "cam-belt" thread, where some people thought they were playing with him but the thread taken as a whole shows who got the last laugh! I'm beginning to think I preferred it when Chatterbox was dominated by bigots! ;-)

I think banning is pointless - everybody on here is anonymous so a banned person can just pop up under a different identity with a different address. In my experience (admittedly limited) the threat of banning from forums has rarely stopped anybody.

If it's " time for change " why don't we try a completely new approach by suspending ( but not banning ) those few members who continually feed trolls ? (lol)

I don't know Donna - that's why I asked but something needs to be done to stop this malady that appears to be sweeping across the cyber world and if trolls lost their deposit and had to pay again to create a new identity it might discourage some of them. I do have to wonder if some of this attitude is brought about by envy as it is easier to disrupt the entertainment of those you envy than it is to get off your own backside and earn enough money to own one of the toys that help to keep us poorer than we would have been without them! Discussion is always good - agreement is rare - but at least we are doing it politely - well so far!

" Perhaps access to the forum should remain free but, and I don't know about everyone else, but in the light of current trends my views have changed and now I would happily pay £10 a year to be able to post and contribute if it prevented the dross from trying to disrupt?" I think you underestimate the number of people who post on this forum precisely because there is no charge, me included, and charging would probably drive away more good members than bad. Also seeing how the posters being objected to are already members of a paying forum I don't think that your idea would work. " Perhaps there is even a case for some honorary moderators who are on here frequently to monitor postings and who could have the power to instantly suspend transgressors". I seem to remember this was tried on MHFacts but was disbanded. A little power is an addictive drug, and I for one would not relish being reprimanded by some ' honorary ' upstart who was high on it. You already have the power of moderation, we all have, just don't respond to any post or poster that you think is offensive. Has you would say, Simples.

Actually the only misleading or wrong information was from Peter when he said that Kevin "only fixed Transits" That's simply not true, I've seen Mary take her Motorhome in there when somebody vandalised it and I think hers is a Peugeot or a Fiat.

Well, the way I read it, he was making you think he believed all that stuff about Webster's Garage and then announced that he'd saved himself money by not needing it after all but thanks very much for all the help. That sounds to me like someone who was winding up those who thought they were winding him up.

It was light hearted banter, hopefully from all sides. No slagging off, no threats, no abuse which made a welcome change in view of what's gone on over the last couple of weeks. Maybe you would have prefered the alternative, who knows?

Well I don't think I was the only one to raise a smile because the man bit back - and if those who were attempting to wind him up couldn't see that he was getting his own back then I think that says a lot about the relative intelligence of those concerned. I don't care for what YH says or the way he says it but only someone with half a brain cell would say that he hasn't achieved what he set out to achieve. (lol)
