alwat Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 I need a brake caliper for a Peugeot J9 (the one that has hand brake attachment) it is for a 1985 Tabbet 510. I have tried lots of Uk dealers and have been told I will not get one in this country. Can anyone help? It is a 2.3 diesel.

Brian Kirby Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 I seem to remember that there is/was a strong recommendation never to replace single caliper, but always to replace as a pair, as the new caliper is likely to be more responsive than the old, potentially causing the vehicle to veer off course when braking. Apologies if I am remembering wrong.
alwat Posted August 22, 2013 Author Posted August 22, 2013 Have not checked the other side, will probably change both if I can get hold of them. Thanks
George Collings Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Provided calipers are in good order and moving freely I would have no qualms in replacing just one. Even if the pads on one side were in contact with the disc a fraction of a second early, braking effort would only be developed when significant hydraulic pressure developed and for that to occur the pads on the opposite side need to be in contact with the disc. The pads/shoes must be replaced on on both sides as the friction materials can vary both in initial grip and as the friction material heats up under prolonged braking. The same normally goes for worn discs/drums although damage such as stone scoring might justify individual repalcement.
