Practical clothing

Does anyone have any tips on clothing suitable for long term travelling? The sort of things we are interested in would be items that are light and easily washed and dried. Garments that can be used in various weather conditions i.e. adding layers rather than having a bulky item. Waterproof jackets and trousers are also of interest. Crease resistant would be good - never have liked ironing! Storage of said items would be something to consider too. We have been told that silk is good. Others have said that the modern micropore fabrics are better. What do you think? Pat

Silk was the first (but expensive) choice in the days when cotton and wool was used for most outdoor clothes. You are much better off using modern materials and should be looking at polyesters of different thicknesses to form a layer system. Very thin polyester layer against skin getting progressively thicker toward an outer garment with number and thickness of layers being chosen with the expected temperature range in mind. Polyesters are hydrophobic and therefore dry much easier than cottons which like to hang on to water, another reason not to have cotton garments next to the skin. The outer shell should be windproof and breathable to allow moisture to wick out from the layers underneath.
