Troll Extermination

Tracker

Recommended Posts

When a troll starts a new thread perhaps if nobody else responded at any point the troll would starve to death - nice thought eh?

When a troll posts on an existing thread perhaps if nobody else responded to it but carried on responding to previous postings the troll would also starve to death - even better thought eh?

Please do not feed the trolls!!

Tracker is absolutely correct and BGD was telling you this many many moons ago and he was correct too but no one took any notice.

None of you should complain on here about trolls because you yourselves feed them and so encourage them and hence become trolls yourselves.

Myself, and I suspect a few others, were on the verge of dropping out from this forum because of this troll business and before you say it I will say for you, maybe that wouldn't be too much of a loss for you lot but if you take note this forum is down to about 8 or 10 regular posters if you include the trolls when I can recall the time when there were probably around 30 or more, where and why have they gone.

Don't complain about trolls just ignore them, they never have ANYTHING constructive to say so why lower yourselves in constantly trading insults with them, JUST GROW UP

That must be the shortest post yet Brian (lol)

Maybe so - but Brian is totally correct.

And as someone who has "engaged" with the troll - I am happy to admit that whilst you can score a a few points in so doing - it makes little difference because the troll would not recognise an intelligent put down if it bit them in the @rse.

So I do believe it will take the sort of stoicism that Brian demonstrates by way of NOT reacting and letting the Troll posts die.

I just wish I had Brian's level of control because when I see something idiotic - I either snigger or laugh out loud - but in either case I seem hell bent on telling the individual what a prat they are.

I clearly have a problem (lol) (lol) (lol) (lol) (lol) (lol)

Absolutely right Syd.

I did drop out & quite frankly was disgusted that it was allowed to continue & by the stupid feeding of them by some on here. The sad thing is that by engaging these trolls we have lost some valuable contributors. The only way to complain about trolls is by PM to the Moderators who hopefully in future will act more quickly - NEVER, EVER, by any reply to the trolls or those who frequent this forum simply to have an argument.

Yes Clive BUT

I see Brian as the reincarnation of Alister Cook and he is destroying that image :-(

Alister Cook of "letters from America" fame?............... :->

Several people, not just BGD, have said that trolls should be ignored - but, unfortunately ( as CliveH admits above ) some people just can't help it !

:-D

Totally agree Malc...

All this pious "Don't feed the trolls" lark being preached by certain members now, is a bit rich when some of them were amongst those who were doing the bulk of the "feeding" (...starting threads about them etc) *-)

Bruce(BGD) was correct from the very beginning...whilst a good many of those preaching to us now, were still engaging in prolonged "tit for tat" posts with this/these trolls... *-)

" (...starting threads about them etc) *-)

If you stop to think about it, starting threads like this one about trolls can hardly be called responding to them but it is one way of discussing and forming a consensus about tactics to be adopted in the absence of moderator action.

As I see it, not responding to trolls means not responding to their own individual posts - something which some of us ceased some time ago - so far from engaging in what you call 'preaching and piety' you might well find that posting 'please do not feed the trolls' whenever a troll like posting or thread appears helps to prevent the pointless tit for tats that they seek from escalating.

Responding to other members on the same thread that a troll tries to disrupt whilst ignoring the troll content makes sense to me otherwise we are simply letting the morons take over the asylum and ruin every thread.

Similarly if by mistake or by some fluke a troll does make a sensible and constructive posting I see no harm in responding politely should anyone feel the need as most of us are adult enough not to carry a grudge.

That's just my view - meanwhile -

Please do not feed the trolls!

Well if the likes of you(and others admittedly) hadn't of kept responding to him/her/them in the first place, then there would've have been any need for threads like this, would there.. *-)

This thread was only one of several that were started with the specific purpose of discussing these trolls...now that's hardly starving them of attention is it... :-S

Sorry Clive..I was responding to Tracker... ;-)

I think the issue is what constitutes a Troll. Some Trolls are clearly there to wind up and it seems crazy to engage in anyway with them. The mods are best placed to deal with them and deal with them they have.

But others - you start off thinking that if you respond politely then they will reciprocate but one in particular on here seems incapable of that and only seems to want to come on here to be obnoxious and rude from the safety of being behind a keyboard.

The historic equivalent would be writing silly little rude notes and dropping them through someones letter box or pidgin hole at work.

Either way historic or present day - the actions are a sign of a sick mind

Absolutely agree Clive - so perhaps then it is time to respond to 'them' in the same way - as soon as it starts getting obnoxious just make one simple post?

Please do not feed the troll!!

I really don't understand why some people find it so difficult to ignore others.

To my mind, constantly repeating the line " Please don't feed the trolls " is precisely what the trolls like to see.

It is a response. It's exactly what the troll is looking for.

Maybe we just all have a different idea of what the word " ignore " means.

Might I venture to suggest that should the forum become 'trolled' again (as opposed to 'trollied' as per Saturday night on the town) and the topic is one to which members wish to respond but ignore the presence of said Troll one simply prefaces their response with the following, or something similar:

The post from (enter Trolls ID) previously is irrelevant.

If sufficient members posted in this vein and really did ignore said Troll it is be my sincere hope that being named in every instance would work in hastening their demise.

I would like to think so too Roger by my suspicion is that naming it/them gives it/them the attention it/they so crave whereas referring to them/it without using any names deprives them/it of any direct recognition.Maybe once most of the regulars are on board it should not hopefully be necessary to even post the usual warning of - you guessed it - please do not feed the trolls - because totally ignoring it/them that crave our attention should suffice to brass them off enough to give up and go annoy another forum!Well that's the theory anyway!
