Hawcara
In MMM August there was a letter about Le Puy en velay. Looked on Google Earth and there appears to a campsite in the town (walking distance to monument). Has anyone been there or has any details of the site. Do not want to roll up and find it is shut or whatever? Thank you B-)
hughman
We've used the campsite quite a few times over the years. You should be ok if you arrive in reasonable time, especially now that the season is finishing, so it'll be less busy. We're planning to spend this Friday night there, so I hope I'm right :-) There's also a smallish aire about 200 yards away at the foot of the church. Francois Gagnaire does a nice dinner if you're feeling flush........
Brian Kirby
It is a reasonable site, but the proprietor can be a bit erratic with his opening and closing times (both site and office!). It is presently listed at open until 31 October, but I'd be a bit chary about just turning up during the past week! Otherwise, it a great location, and an easy walk into town - which is quite fun to wander around. Used to be a municipal, but now privately owned, or run under contract - don't know which. Camping Bouthezard. GPS N45.05042 E3.88094.
rupert123
Last time we went, two years ago, we just turned up, that was about mid September. The site is usually closed for lunch and has a barrier but their is just room to wait outside if you wish. Two years ago thought it was a municipal but it would appear from Brians post things have changed. It was ok, much better than the aire which I remember as a dusty carpark next to the main road. Hawcara
Thank you all for that. Have read off the co-ordinates from Google Earth and will give it a go, time permitting. :-D
susie1997
We agree with these posts, we stayed there, owner happy to see customers lined up outside but won't let them in until 2pm, they usually left to go to the Aire about a hundred yards away and never back, site was quite empty, this was in April this year, owner very nice but I couldn't understand why they let this happen. Site was nearly empty as well. Some sites just stated on door, find pitch and come back after 2. much better that losing business I would say . It's a lovely place to wander round though, le puy I mean. We could see the helicopters landing on the roof of the hospital just across the river and the view at night all illuminated of the monument was lovely from the site.
