Hi all

The auto fridge stopped working on 230v a couple of months ago in France and I tried to get a technician to sort out the problem in France no luck so I just used it on Gas.

Then last week the gas and battery stopped working also I finally contacted a technician and he said that water had got in on the circuit board on the fridge so he changed it and it started to work again on battery and gas as he did not have a French to English plug and I did not have mine with me (as I had left it on the campsite)

he said it is ok it will work now I think he was wanting to go for his dinner.

So I went back to my campsite and guess what!! the bloody thing would not work on 230v.

I rang him again and he said O! that is ok bring it back on Monday and I will sort it out, Bring it back!! I was 32 mile away another 30 quid down the drain.

If you can to save you problems try to insulate the wireing at the back of your fridge water comes in at the top vent and soaks everything

Curious to know how water got to the circuit boards. These are normally near the front and as the rear of the fridge is sealed to the outside (Or it should be) then water cannot get anywhere near the electrics. The vent is also designed so unless w\ater is flowing upwards, it should not get in at all. However, my own fridge is not a 'posh' one with automatic selection etc so I cannot comment on the reliabilty, or otherwise, of the 'computery bits' Normally the 230 volt system is sealed and works until the element packs in.

Is there any chance water is getting there from another source inside the van? If the van is relatively new, take it back to the dealer to sort out, if not get a reputable engineer to check it out. The fridge is normally a well functioning bit of kit so problems such as yours should not occur.

Hi Dave,

The problem is that when you are driving through heavy rain the spray from the front goes all up the side of the van as there are two vents on the offside of my van the water must enter the vents and as the circuit board is on the back of my fridge that is how the box containing the circuit board must be vunerable to water.

Also there are electrical connections and wiring fastened to the left side behind the vent so I will have to see if I can insulate it in some way to stop it happening again.

If the wiring was on the right side then it possibly would not have happened but as the vent stack for the heater is on that side that would not be possible.

Can anyone give me any ideas on how to do this or have you overcome this problem.

Fitting the covers when driving seem like the easiest way to stop spray getting it.....

(..although ours are cheap and brittle, so I don't think ours would last very long if they were fitted & removed each and every time it rained...(lol) )

If it's only a few droplets causing the problems, could you spray any vulnerable electrical components with something like a waxoyl substance?...

(..although I suspect that you shouldn't do that on a PCB..as they probably need more specialised product..)

Failing that, can you protect them by gaffa taping some sort of plastic cowl/flap over them..?

But if spray is getting in whilst driving, wouldn't this be a very common problem...?
