Visiting the NEC show

We're contemplating visiting the Motorhome Show at the NEC next month and are in a quandary as to how to attend.

Friends advise us to spend 2 days viewing all the goodies.

We could take the 'van and stay on the Caravan Club site for a couple of nights before moving on or maybe take the car, arrive early, visit, stay overnight in one of the hotels, revisit and then return home.

Any comments / advice most welcome.

We usually only spend a day at the show. We tend to just look at a specific brand of motorhome, decided upon on the journey there, then we check out all the surrounding stalls where the bargains are. Then if we have any energy left we tend to mooch about looking at other motorhomes and getting a few quotes on ours, they are never worth the changeover though :-D

Well what do you want to do there? That will dictate how much time you need.

I sometimes go and but have specific ideas about exactly what I want to see and / or buy. It usually takes me about two hours to do what I need to do and with a bit of time left for lollygagging the whole shebang is in the bag in one steady afternoon.

Other people have different requirements of the thing. Only you know why you want to go.

Whatever, I'd definitely not be paying £30 a night to park on a car park in Birmingham, or anywhere. Can't believe anyone would be daft enough to do so either.

when I go to a show i try and plan ahead. decide what models I want to see mark them on show map and concentrate on those..have a bit of a browse if time allows, but try not to get distracted, unless I see something that changes my mind. I then get it down to the two vans I fancy and concentrate on those, laying on beds, sitting in lounge, toilet etc...just to confirm if it will work for us. 2 days works much better. you're spending a lot of money so not like high street shopping!

In 2006 remember calling brownills to confirm that the euromobil I was interested in would be at NEC and when we got there all Hymers*-) ...we also got food poisoning from the lunch salad (wife a vegetarian and it was the only thing we shared) so I only visit Dusseldorf now :-D

might be worth keeping an eye out for the DFDS show offer code and sharing on here :-D

We've got a handful of 'vans that we would definitely like to give a good looking over, but as we've never been before, it'd probably be impossible to simply gawp at lots of lovely stuff there.

I respect your decision not to want to spend £30 to camp on a car park, but as we'd need to spend at least one night over, I thought it might be better than spending £100 or so for an NEC hotel room.

Anyone actually stayed on the CC site, by any chance?

I was referring to the temporary 'site' the CC is creating, which is basically a car park near the venue with a 6A EHU for which they intend to charge £30 per night.

Were I to wish to stay over in the motorhome I'd personally, most certainly, be looking for something far more attractive. What are motorhomes for if not for supporting comfortable and independent travel. I'm sure the club will be able to offer a well rehearsed justification for this exploitative price, and I'm equally sure they will receive - arguably undeserved - patronage.

Have stayed in many a splendid hotel in the west Midlands at comparable prices to the CC's bit of tarmac thanks to laterooms.com

It's not so much about the money as being exploited.
