Good deal on glasses at Tesco

Hubby has bought some new glasses, nothing exciting about that, but they have cost him nothing!

He went to Tesco who had a 'Buy one get one free' offer on (including single vision lenses) so he had a free eye test there and then we chose some frames for him which took aaaaaaggggggeeeeeeeessssssssss ......! Anyway, the full cost of his new glasses came out at £300 - that's £120 for the frame plus £90 for the upgrade for first pair of lenses (he has a very high index prescription so needs ultra thin ones), £0 for the second frame and another £90 for the upgrade for the second pair of lenses.

What made this 'offer' even better, though, is that Tesco are also doing 'double up' offer at the moment too, so we exchanged £150 worth of Tesco clubcard vouchers for Tesco optician's deal vouchers, so they've not cost us any money as such!

Before anyone quibbles, note that we shop at Tesco anyway and on the whole buy stuff when it's on offer, or reduced, so we haven't paid a premium in order to 'obtain' the vouchers ... we are well happy! :-D

They always do buy one get one free Mel. We get our glasses there. We usually have one pair ordinary and one sun glasses. As we get MORE sun down our way!!

Always helpful too, if they become loose or need adjusting.

As we have a large Tesco Extra, we can almost be Tesco Self Sufficient , and the car park is one of the best space size around.

But still cost £150 in vouchers (got two pairs for £69 at Specsavers inJune)

Weather here is getting warmer for next week up around 24 degrees, it has been cold and wet recently.

Perhaps I should add that the high £150 cost was partly due to the frames as hubby got some stronger/better quality ones than the cheapest available as he isn't the most careful person in the world and his lenses are a very, very, very high index (in fact he gets a sub from the NHS for part of the cost of the lenses!) so the cheaper frames just aren't good enough. The ultra thin lenses come with anti-glare and anti-reflective coating as standard so no extra cost for them (you normally pay extra for these even on the buy one get one free deals wherever you buy them) - if he didn't have these types of lenses he'd end up with bottle bottoms and glasses that weighed a ton! 8-)

As for Specsavers ... not a chance - the last time he went there and got their 'ultra thin' lenses they were twice the thickness of anywhere else. If you want cheap and cheerful glasses and don't have a need for extra coatings or high-index lenses then they may be fine, but in hubby's particular case - he is as blind as a ... mole ... without his glasses - it is more important to get the right quality of glasses. We did enquire about glasses for hubby in the summer from them but the cost was way over what it was from Tesco anyway as they really hike up the price of the 'special' lenses.

As for it still costing £150 ... that's still half the cost and as we had many more vouchers than we will spend on tripple-up deals before they expired, it made sense to use them. We've still got loads of vouchers 'in the bank' at Tesco (we use their Christmas club so they store the up for us until November) so will have more than enough for any Eurotunnel crossings and other stuff we normally spend them on.

As for cheap glasses you won't beat what I have ... I get mine off the internet - my last pair only cost £10 delivered!!!!! :D

Does hubby drive, sounds a trifle difficult?

Our Tesco vouchers amount to about £20.00 per year and are exchanged immediately to get maximum value

You shoud look at what other offers they have for the vouchers as most double or triple the value. For example EuroTunnel where they are worth 3 times as much.

Mel could ( maybe she did) have doubled up £75 of vouchers to get a £150 token to spend in store at the opticians. So could have cost her equivalent of £75 and not £150. Tell me you did double up Mel!

Not sure what you mean by the above! :-S

Nor this ... it would seem you are just getting the face value (ie £20) so not sure how that gives you 'maximum' value ..... *-)

We exchanged Tesco vouchers with a face value of £150 for £300 worth of Tesco opticians deal vouchers so got double the value as opposed to just spending them in store at the face (£150) value. We've got loads left so plenty for Eurotunnel etc at 3 x the face value! :->
