alan
Hi all We are thinking of visiting the Netherlands this April, had no experience of this area - has anybody any suggestions where we should visit and what are the campsites like - any suggestions? And the big one, how expensive compared with France? Thanks in anticipation. Alan :-D
Dave225
First thing is to check your dates. If they are around Easter then be prepared for high prices. Secondly, if you plan anywhere near Amsterdam again be prepared for high prices for any attractions, plus that is the time Keukenhoff is under way and attracts a lot of visitors. If you are planning to visit the east or south of the country then things will be a lot easier. In general Holland is an easy place to visit as English is spoken everywhere, if you have no Dutch language skills. However, some rural spots may be a bit more interesting both from the fat you will have to try Dutch and the fact that you will see true Holland. So you can aim for the usual tourist destinations (traps??) such as Amsterdam, Den Haag, Delft etc and enjoy them but take plenty of money, or you can venture farther afield and see other attractions. By the way if you decide to visit Amsterdam do not go on a tram or bus without a ticket. These can be bought at offices at Central Station and you can get Day, 48 hour, 72 hour or weekly passes which are much cheaper. The machines are in English and accept normal Debit/Credit cards. One campsite we have used is Camping Konigshof. It is between Amsterdam and the Haque and is a very nice site wit swimming pool etc, but check prices. http://www.koningshof.co.uk/ Compared with France??? Probably the same or more expensive. By the way if visitng any city, as with the UK, watch your wallet. Holland has a similar immigration problem as the UK. Be careful and you will have no probs. alan
Hi Folks Thanks for your varied replies and trouble taken. We think we'll try the Netherlands for April next year. The costs seem to be higher, but as we normally travel further afield, we think our total costs will be about the same (swings and roundabouts). Thanks again, it's been very helpful - the Forum always comes up with the answers :-D Alan
Dave225
FRANKP60 - 2013-10-15 1:14 PM If you intending to visit flower festival Easter could be to early ,subject to what kind of spring we have.We went couple of years ago end April early May flowers were good .Sites in area more expensive due to flower festival.Found food much the same as Europe but very limited in choice .Fuel diesel was lot cheaper than petrol. 'limited in choice'. Very curious as to what you mean. Albert Heijn for example has even more on display than Sainsbury's. Also remember Dutch house fraus do not cook from scratch. Everything they put on the table is already assembled for them at the shops so they just throw it in the oven/frypan. Many years ago Dutch friends entertained us with a brilliant fondue and my wife was amazed and asked the hostess for the recipes for the sauces. She never got an answer and a year or so later when we were living in Holland she found out all the sauces were available from AH. Cheat was her comment.
