France/Spain busy holiday period - 2014

Usually we go away April-June but due to trip booked in May on Trans-Mongolian express and then a family wedding on 3 October means we are considering northern Spain for 2014 'last week August - 1 October - to try and stay away as long as possible.

I've heard there are specific days/periods to avoid as roads are busy and sites full - but can't remember when this is. Can anyone help? Is it worth going in August - or does this very busy time extend into September as well?

We would plan to go Eurotunnel and use ACSII card if possible.

Thanks in anticipation

Be aware that ACSI usually ends in September, as we have just found out, trying to find places open down on the med coast of France. Northern Spain lovely , but not sure what weather would be like in October, as same as Uk

A quick check of 2013 ACSI shows that in north spain it usually becomes available 1st september.

August can be very busy, its traditionaly when the French go on hols. Plus depending on your route through France, and what kind of sites you like, you will have lots of British school children. Expect to pay full whack in August. Hope you enjoy the trans Mongolian Express, sounds great.

Cheers Iain

CORECTION

I should have said that most of the ACSI sites down in France where closed at the end of September

I know some ACSI sites are open all year, just need to check sites in places you want to stay are open

We went to a site at La Rochelle , which the book said stayed open until end of October (Misprint) as it closed 30th September. We met another couple who were also caught out, but as they where in a tent and it still had the staff there clear up, they let them stay one night.

Generally, repeat generally :-), the pressure on sites begins to fall off after 15 August. That doesn't necessarily mean the prices drop, but the number of vacant spaces begins to rise. However, it depends on where you go. Seaside sites and honeypot areas are inevitably busier, less popular places will have spaces throughout the summer school holidays, though not necassarily when you want to stay, and you may have little to no choice on pitches.

No point booking sites, it limits your options. Just make sure you take good reference information to go looking for others if the first is full or unacceptable, and don't arrive too late - just after lunch is ideal to maximise choice/availability.

Re ACSI, what folk need is the DVD that contains all the ACSI inspected sites, including those doing the discount scheme. This can be installed on a laptop and the information can be filtered for sites open on particular dates, sites with a various features, and for those sites that are in the ACSI scheme.

There are many, many, sites on the disc that are open September/October, and a goodly number that are open year round.

It is not the case by any means that sites on the ACSI scheme are cheaper than others that are open at the same time. Campsite owners don't cut their own throats to attract the Dutch or anyone else, and they all know that once August ends they have to drop their rates. Some municipals are even cheaper than the lowest ACSI rated sites, but few of them will appear on the DVD as ACSI seem to make demands on the site owners for them to be included.

But, don't rely on any source as infallible. Owners can suffer illness or death, and companies go broke, so there is always uncertainty whatever dates may have been published. Just plan for the odd surprise and then you can get around it if it arises.

On which tack, I'm still awaiting clarification from the person who posted complaining that the food on an ACSI listed site at Issoire wasn't as good as was made out, and thought ACSI should have made sure it would be! :-) Takes all sorts!
