Ruth
Hi, does anyone have any gems to recommend in dumfries and galloway? We like small sites/c.l's...larger ones really only if they are special in terms of location. Have got the directories but personal recs are always a treat. We will be there only 5 or 6 days , need to meet a son in carlisle after, so anywhere nice near Carlisle also gratefully received. Thanks, Ruth
jockwalian
Hi Ruth. I`m new on here so i hope you dont mind me answering yor quiery. The southern coast of D@G is a beautiful part of the country, there are quite a few sites along the coast itself.Rockliffe is very pleasant and a favourite one of mine is Sandyhills about 10-15 miles past Dumfriess. Its a commercial site with everthing you need except the pub full of idiots. There is an hotel within a short walking distance if this is a requirement for you.The headland out of the back of the site with its rockpools and vast tracts of sand are excellent for an afternoon wander.Gretna has two sites which would serve a purpose for your visit to Carlisle, only 10 mins on the motorway. The one at Scotlands first house is literally only 2 mins off the M74 (M6) and everyone that i know that has stopped there has always been complimentary about it,i havnt used it personally as i live in Gretna. If you need any info i would be more than happy to get it for you from the tourist information at the Gateway centre up here. Martin..

howie
Make sure you book early Ruth. As Martin said, this is a beautiful area and very popular. It took me ages to to arrange places to stay the last time we toured this part of the world. Howard.
Ruth
That's interesting, Howard, as someone else said just the opposite, not to bother to book! We are going from BH Monday (night, so hopefully some will have cleared off) for the weekdays of the following week, do you seriously think it will all be full at that point? Thanks for the input. It sounds a beautiful area and I wish we had longer...it's sandwiched between two committments.
howie
We toured this area late spring of last year Ruth. We finally booked in to a site just north of Stranraer. I know its the end of the bank holiday but I still think you should book ahead. We normally only stay the one night before moving on, and I often get the feeling they are not really interested. Hope this isn,t the case. Howard.
foxy
Hi Ruth spent a bit of time up there this June, if you are a member of the caravan Club there is a bonzer Cl at Port Logan it is set on a cliff top overlooking the sea and small harbour. in the village is a pub which is 5 minutes away. another CL we stayed at was at the John Paul Jones museum Kirkbean. Just outside Drummore there is another CL wwhich has good views over the Mull of Galloway. was really impressed by the scenery and the friendliness of the locals, although many were english incomers. lizken
Hi Ruth Try the Caravan Club at on the harbourside at Garlieston Very quiet site, with pub and restaurant also on harbourside. Very litlle else other than lovely unspoilt countryside. The whole of Dumfries and Galloway is worth a visit, but get off the A75 into Kirkcudbright, Kippford, Whithorn etc. Ken
docted
As lizken say the site at Garlieston is special, the site is split in two and one side is alway quieter. Additionally the CC site at Carlisle is very quiet through the week outwith the peak times. Docted
