Hi, we've been through the tunnel twice now in early January and both times the weather was nice.not a snowflake to be seen.we are leaving here tomorrow and again will use the tunnel on Wednesday, no snow forecast. As previous post mentioned, the 20k French side is the worst part but apart from that the roads are very good, especially the Spanish side. Happy travels.

When going through the Somport Tunnel towards Spain, if you take the first possible exit you go into the fascinating little village of Canfranc. Then, amazingly, a vast derelict railway station network that was built to be a major interchange, but then abandoned. Its partly fenced off, with the fence broken down in places so I went in for a walk round and nobody said anything. I guess because the Spanish have a different attitude to compensation. If you fall down a hole you won't get any - they will just say you should look where you are going :D

Used this tunnel twice - once in Sept 2012 and again in July 2013. Some several Kms south of Canfranc Estacion on the main road is a small town called Villanau which lies on both sides of the road. It is possible to wild camp on a road which can be seen from main road - left hand side going south. saw a couple of vans there plus ours. There's also a village "green" where we have stopped for a couple of nights on the Sept trip.

Also before you reach Villanau there are a couple of waste ground places on the left going south where wagons pull in for the night and we have seen 'vans overnighting there.
