Battery Charging

Hi Dave, You were up early a 4am posting? My guess is that the engine starter battery will not be on charge when on hookup. On my system I can select the habitation electrics from either Car or Van, if I select car and switch on the charging system, then my starter battery will be charged, but I will also be running my habitation electrics from the car battery. Selecting Van will run the habitation electrics from the leisure battery and switching the charger on will charge the leisure battery but not the car starter battery. An easy way to check if a battery is on charge and you have a voltmeter, is to take a voltage reading from either the car cigarette lighter or directly from the car battery terminals, first with the charger off, then again with the charger on. With the charger on and charging a battery the voltage will be around 13.8volts, if the battery is not on charge the voltage will be 12volts to 12.7, this voltage assumes you have had the engine turned off for around 1 hour. The same test is applicable to your leisure battery terminals - around 12volts with charger off and 13.8volts with the charger on. Regards Terry
Rusty - 2006-08-27 4:00 AM I have just bought, a 1999 Auto Trail Mohican, can anyone tell me if the (Engine Battery) is charging when on mains Hook Up.
Hi Rusty, I've fitted a Van Bitz battery master http://tinyurl.com/e3j5k which will allow you to charge the engine and leisure batteries at the same time. When I'm on mains or using the solar panel my two leisure batteries and the engine battery are all being charged. Don
