Severe Weather Conditions

Just got off the phone with a friend who lives in Regina, Saskatchewan.

She said that since early this morning the snow has been nearly waist high and is still falling.

The temperature is 32 below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force.

The wind chill is now -59.

Her husband has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare.

She says that if it gets much worse, she may have to let the drunken bar steward in.

I used to go to Canada on business. Once when I went in winter it was so cold that the synthetic soles on my UK shoes simply broke in half. I had to buy some new shoes there more suitable for the conditions. I also remember hiring a car there and being provided with two special candles when they handed it over. When I asked what they were for I was told they would provide sufficient heat to keep me alive for 24 hours if I got stranded and the car ran out of fuel!

I flew to Toronto with a friend to bring back another friend who had been badly injured in a car crash ( the Canadians were brilliant in every area of his recovery !) and I remember being told on the bus from the aircraft to the terminal by some Canadians that we should cover out noses and not breath through our noses directly in the cold as the lining of our nose would freeze without our realising it.

We would only know later when we had bad nose bleeds and could need repair to our noses!!

We were totally unprepared for the - 14 deg C which with the wind chill was an effective - 24 deg C. We stayed for one night at the Hamilton Post House and amazed the girls on reception by saying we were going for a "walk" - this is just not done in such conditions but the sun was shining and it looked lovely.

Only when our jeans went stiff (I actually heard them creaking as i walked) and the cold made my knees go numb did we realise that getting back to the hotel was a good idea.

The Canadians were great - could not be more helpful.

I lived in a log cabin (more like a wooden shed!) in Rutland Massachusetts, near Worcester Massachusetts in the winter of 1975. One one night the temperature was stated as 56 degrees of frost (Degrees F) which is -24F. We were told on the radio not to try & start the car as the battery may explode.

We did throw a bucket of water up outside & yes the droplets had frozen before much of it had hit the ground. The cabin nearly caught fire as we had stoked the wood burning stove up so high that it was glowing!

We had to cuddle to stay warm - she didn't mind?

We survived!

No rain much today but we have a fair bit due this evening and tomorrow. Trouble is being fairly close to the coast we have water draining onto the land from everywhere.

Our drains are backing up a bit - not due to our overindulgence at Christmas - but the water table is so high rain water is getting into the system. So lift a manhole and no "muck" (apologies) just what looks like the ordinary "grey water" we are all used to halfway up the side.

All is OK currently - but much more is on the way.

Oh how i would love to be dry and warm when out with the dogs.
